Erin Andrews on This Week's Insane Dancing with the Stars: 'I Feel Like I Took Truth Serum'

Dancing with the Stars is getting so outrageous that I almost need Erin Andrews on the phone with me as I watch. It's maddening! With Bristol Palin surviving another week and Carrie Ann Inaba sparring with Maks, it's easy to get a little huffy. In our epic interview this week, Miss Andrews discusses her love of Kyle Massey, Brandy's emotions, Maksim Chmerkovskiy's passion, and the possibility that Bristol will make it to the finals.

Yet another zany week, Erin. How did you feel about the "instant dance" idea?

I thought it was a great idea. It's funny, my girlfriends and I were talking during the show and texting. They were saying, "My gosh, if I had been on the show when the instant dance happened, I'd have had a meltdown." I mean, musicality? I do think I can hear beats in the music and stuff, but it's different when you hear the band playing it and you have to perform it. It does get a little chaotic. I was so impressed by the way everybody came out and really seemed to nail it. I didn't think they were going to get time to practice it. That was new to me. I thought they were just going to get the song and have to go. I'm glad they had time to practice.

But I have to tell you, when Kyle came out and did his jive, I was screaming in my living room. He's amazing. I was just so excited for [Kyle] and Lacey; I think he's a contender for the final. He's a contender for the mirror ball. He's just a different kind of dancer. He's just kind of silly! And he's learning every week. When they came out and they did the first instant dance, I was like, "OK, wow. This is incredible."

When I watched him kill it this week, I thought, 'Is the Erin Andrews prophecy coming true?' He might run away with this.

I know! He's phenomenal.

Your boy Maks had a slight kerfluffle with Carrie Ann this week. How did you react? Did you hurl things at the TV? Scream, etc.?

I think that when I first heard them [spar], I was like, "Oh gosh. Oh no." But then when I thought about it what happened afterward when they went to commercial -- he's so sweet. He was just sticking up for Brandy. A lot of the time when the judges comment on the choreography, the way the dance was planned out, the pros take it upon themselves to say, "Just judge her for the dance. Don't judge her for the choreography." That's all he was doing. He's very, very protective over his stars. He wants them to feel comfortable. He made a comment to me one night before the show started about my wardrobe, and he said, "I just want you to walk down those stairs and feel the most glamorous and beautiful you've ever felt in your entire life." He wants nothing but for his stars to feel the absolute best about themselves. You could see from the package that they showed with Brandy, he said, "Look, it's just about us. It's about nobody else. Do this for yourself." That was just Papa Bear taking over and being really protective over his baby. I knew they'd make a big deal about it on all the gossip shows and in the tabloids and on the results show. I don't know if you saw, but afterward, when Kurt was out, Maks went down and -- he's so sweet -- he hugged Kurt right away. And then he went off -- I watched him in the background -- he hugged Carrie Ann. I think in the end Carrie Ann knows what he's doing. He lets his emotions get the best of him, but that's why he's so wonderful.

Can you recall any times when the judges criticized you for things you couldn't control, like the choreography?

Oh, absolutely. Our samba that we did -- I had this gorgeous purple feather outfit with a nude top and embroidery. Our story that we were telling -- and this is why I love Maks, but -- he thinks of these different stories. Our dance, the song was "When I Get You Alone." He was like, "I want to pretend you're coming home from a glamorous ball. And I'm this guy, and I'm all over you. And you're like, 'No, no, no, no. Let me have a second.'" It was so awesome. There was a part when I rip off his sleeves and then I rip open his shirt, and then he ripped off his shirt. Well, Len went to town that night and just said, "I'm tired of it, Maks. She's a good dancer. I'm tired of you taking off your clothes." And Maks was like, "You're not listening! You're not understand the theme of our song." I got OK scores. I didn't get the greatest scores on it. But he really felt like we were being penalized -- I was being penalized -- because Maks took his shirt off. The next week we did our foxtrot where we joked he would take his shirt off, but then we decided not to in the middle of the dance. Yeah, he got really frustrated with the judges. He said, "You're penalizing Erin for something I created."

Jennifer Grey racked up a perfect score this week. If any dance this week was worth 30 points, do you think it was hers?

Well, her instant dance got the perfect score, right?

Yes.

I thought her instant dance was hot. I mean, that's what I wrote down in my notes. I wrote, "Wow. J. Hot." I'm such a dork in that I thought one of the moves was like in Dirty Dancing when he put his hand down her arm and then he spun her out. And that extension that she held was so beautiful. I have goosebumps thinking about it. I wasn't surprised that she got all 10s in that routine at all. Now I will say -- in her first dance, I loved the dance, I loved the dress, I was excited when I saw her dance, but (sighs) again, with all the "My body's falling apart" stuff. I read on somebody's tweet, I forget whose it was, but they were like, "Is she lying to us about her injury?" She builds up this "I'm hurt, I'm hurt, I'm hurt," and then she comes out, does the dance, and she's insane. So I can understand her body falling apart, but I appreciated this week that there wasn't a lot of crying. I appreciated that. She can't help that her body's falling apart; I like her playing it low-key, instead of being hysterical and everything like that. She went out there and I think she put herself on top of the leader board again. From her first dance to her instant dance, it was "Wow. Wow. Wow." That's the girl we saw at the beginning of the season and I think she put herself back on top.

She's got to be really, really careful with her packages though in the next two weeks. You don't want America to just get tired of the crying and the "My body's falling apart." It's OK because at this point in the competition, everybody's body is falling apart. Evan [Lysacek] had broken toes! He had a head injury. I had a broken foot which I didn't know about. We just knew my foot was swollen every single day, and we didn't know why. And I had a back injury. The day of the finale, we were doing run-through, we did my dance, and something popped in the middle of run-through. I started hysterically crying, and Maks was like, "What, what, what?" And I'm like, "It's fine, let's just go." At this stage of the game, everybody is hurt. You can't cry about it, and you have to soldier on.

It sounds like you're saying that Jennifer is the front-runner, but maybe Kyle or Brandy can take that from her very soon.

I'll be very, very honest. I think Jennifer is absolutely the front-runner right now. She's America's sweetheart. I'd hate to sound corny, but she's "Baby" to America. I think everybody loves the storyline that she's 50 years old and she's doing things with her body that are incredible. She looks wonderful. But I'll be very candid in the fact at all these packages and America's vote could really hurt her if she continues being very emotional. She can be injured and she can talk about that, but don't use that as the only thing you're talking about. She has a beautiful husband, a gorgeous daughter, friends who come to support her. Maybe use that. It was nice to see her dad in the package. But there is a guy named Kyle Massey who is so cute, so likable, and so fun. And he makes fun of himself -- and I used to do that, people love it when you make fun of yourself -- and he is becoming very charming to America. She needs to watch out for that. He may come out of the back, the back of the field there, and take over all the votes. Because people may start to get tired of it.

Erin Andrew has exceptionally good perception and I hope Brandy reads it.

I like Derek & Jenifer but please stop the complains that do not help. That wil help you more.

  • Susan says:

Erin you made last season. You and Maks were the draw for the show last season. Erin you and Maks were no showmance. Just look at you and Maks last week we all see it the way you and Maks are together, sorry but you and Maks can't keep your hands off of each other and Maks was always looking were you were in the interview lines. Girl go get your guy back off the other blonde in his life right now.

  • Anonymously says:

Erin you are the reason we kept watching season 10. Erin why is it Maks and you are not dating? You and Maks kept holding each other and he was really wondering were you were last week after the show in the interview lines he kept looking for you. Erin go get your Rush back off the other woman he is seeing in LA.

  • WTF!! says:

Could you display your dislike for Brandy any more??? For someone who says she wants Maks to win you sure have a funny way of showing it. I mean tweeting vote for Kurt, really??? Kyle is so great, voters should take note, really? And all you could find to say about Brandy is that she is emotional, what about her dancing?? You said Maks let's his emotions get the best of him, but that's why he's wonderful YET, Brandy is too emotioanl??? I have never seen him defend someone as he did Brandy and that says a lot about their partnership. Maybe you should try reading his last TV guide Blog or maybe you already have and that's why you're so negative towards Brandy.
I could never see Mel B writing something like this. It's sooo obvious you're jealous. I mean, I would be too after seeing that Waltz, or maybe it was the way he wanted to be her hero.
"But I worry that she’s going about it the wrong way — I think Maks addressed that with her too." LMAO! you are just too much! You don't have to worry, Maks is taking great care of her!

Wow why all the attacks on Erin she did say "I Feel Like I Took Truth Serum" The woman is just speaking her mind through her own eyes.

Erin hates Brandy and it shows. She is so two faced it is reflectable all over her. Erin is so jealous of Brandy being better a partner than Erin. I DOUBT IF MAKS addressed to Brandy that Brandy couldn't win this season. Erin has nothing but excuses for the reason she didn't win. The truth is ERIN was not a good dancer! She should have been 5th that season but she kept flirting with the football teams to keep her in even though she looked spastic when she danced. I hated to watch her dance! TRUTH!

  • Shamone says:

Can u be more obvious in your dislike for Brandy??? Too emotional? She's no more emotional than you were. The only difference is that Brandy wears her emotions on her sleeve all the time and does not wait for the right moment to display them. But her emotions add so much to her dancing. She has been awesome!! You are not the only one who has been through some things in her life. May be hard for you to believe but some have been through much worse than you. So yeah she may get emotional from time to time, but just like you she has the right.
Also, you mentioned nothing about the dances of anyone. So this entire article is fluff with no meaningful content.

  • dianne says:

Yep, you got that right sister. Jealousy just reared its ugly head, big time!

  • ten2279 says:

For those crazed Erin and Maks fans, LET IT GO. I wish they were dating too but lets move on.
And I don't think she hates Brandy. She just saying that she needs to calm down about wanting to win and embrace the experience.

  • Inna says:

"I will say, Evan had a hysterical line last season. One time after dress rehearsal, Evan told our casting director, 'I hear Julianne Hough is coming back as a contestant!' ”
Lol, that about sums up S10!

  • LMAO says:

I like how she implied that Brandy wasn't normal and overly emotional.

  • Carrie Notheis says:

I guess I missed something. Erin is just very real about everyone. She was very real and complimentary about everyone and everybody and has loyalty to an extent, but won't make it easy for Brandy just out of her love for Maks. Keep it real, people. Erin is one of the main reasons that people even watched DWTS, hands down. Many didn't even care for Brandy. I am impartial to her, but like her better due to Erin's comments and Maks and his loyalty to his partner. She is too intense. I would love to see someone like Kyle who had no skill win who truly is enjoying and learning week after week and we are falling in love with his spirit, like Erin last year.
As far as Erin and Maks.....we can only hope, right?

  • WOW says:

I thought people watched because of Chad and Cheryl.

  • A. Mills says:

"I was just so excited for he and Lacey..." Erin, do you honestly think that is correct English?! Would you really say "I was just so excited for he" if Lacey were not part of your sentence? The word, he, can never be the object of a preposition. He is always used as the subject (the nominative case). You should probably remember a teacher somewhere giving you the tip to just omit the other person from your sentence and ask yourself if it sounds correct. As a broadcast announcer, it comes with the territory that you need to know and use correct grammar. Additionally, did you count how many times you said "like" as if you were a teenage Valley girl? That is also inappropriate for someone on the national broadcast scene. Some refresher grammar courses might be a good idea....not trying to be mean here but correct grammar is part of doing your job professionally.

  • CAL says:

I think Erin is spot on with her review. In my opinion, both Jennifer and Brandy are emotional and don't appear to be enjoying themselves. The purpose of the show is to be entertaining, neither Jennifer nor Brandy have provided that. Now Kyle, I'm with Erin, I hope he makes it to the Finals.

  • Torris M says:

I wanted to read her blog again and was hoping last week was a fluke. No such luck. She was super bitchy last week and this week is no different.
You can REALLY tell how close she and Maks still are. I know I try to sabotage all my best friends efforts too. That's what I call real love.
I DEFINITELY won't be back next week. I've had about all I can stomach from her.

  • Katie M says:

I saw how passionate Maks got on the results show defending Brandy. I have never seen him like this before. I like the way she calmed him down saying it's okay and then giving him a kiss on the cheek awww. They truly seem to be in sink with each other now. My point is that I think you noticed this, and I'm sorry but I have to agree with some of the posters, it seems like you don't like Brandy and I don't understand why. It almost seem as if you really are jealous and that's sad because I thought you were better than this. Your ending was especially very nasty.
    Once a fan,
    Katie

  • Dee says:

Erin, for the record, Bristol has only teared up once and said she is homesick and wants to see her family. Do not belittle her for that. Now if you want to talk about someone who we are all getting sick of her complaining and aches and pains, maybe Jennifer Grey should go home. Talk about a drama queen, she goes on every week, it is something new. I would like to see that stop, put up or shut up for the last time.

  • Reid McComment says:

Brandy and Jennifer should not have to have the backing of a political group to win. It's not fair. Read the whole story at: http://apleblog.com

  • Louis Virtel says:

Oh, shut up. She was practically monologuing to me -- she's allowed a grammatical slip-up or two.
By the way, an ellipsis has three periods, not four.

  • dancefan says:

Tell them why you mad Erin! Because you know that Brandy is the truth! You couldn't hold a candle to her. Maks have it bad son, he's taking it to the judges for her. That's how you know she's the truth!

  • Sharon says:

Wow!! I didn't even read the last part of the interview until now. Erin and Louis Virtel was that last statement and answer really necessary.? Brandy knows exactly where her next meal is coming from. It's coming from other projects that she has besides DWTS. Erin don't forget the fact that you said something to the effects of DWTS giving you your life back. Really? The show was that meaningful for you? Your experience with Maks was that meaningful for you. All of a sudden Brandy is sooo over the top in her emotions when you were the same. Erin what has Brandy done to you to make you be so mean in your comments about her? She doesn't want Maks as a boyfriend!!! However, she and Maks will remain great friends. Is that what you're upset about?? Erin, as a professional you should be more objective in your critiques. Didn't they teach you that in Gainesville?

  • Shamone says:

Erin, you need to be more objective in your critiques. They should have taught you that in Gainesville. You don't hide your dislike for Brandy very well. I remember hearing you say how important DWTS was for you..."It gave you your smile back". Your experience with Maks was so important for you at the time. Nowww Brandy is so over the top in her emotions; according to you. That last statement in the interview was definitely not necessary. Brandy is well aware that DWTS does not define who she is. I'm sure she knows for certain where her next meal is coming from. You have no class or tact in your comments. Please go find some.
