Conan O'Brien's Ratings Fall on Night Two

teamcoco3.jpgDidn't watch Conan O'Brien last night? You weren't alone. Despite the appearance of a blame-worthy Tom Hanks, Conan fell some 30 percent in total viewers and 35 percent in the coveted 18-49 demographic. On the plus side, Conan continues to skew incredibly young: 2.1 of the 2.8 million total viewers were under 50, with an average audience age of 30. Coco: The voice of a new generation! Well sure, we can stay up and watch his debut -- that was an event. But get serious, some of us have to get up early and work on Wed. morning.

I looked forward to his show's revival and enjoy watching it but I would have enjoyed it more if the guests were better. I mean having Seth Rogen on? He's alright but he's more of the kind of guy you invite when there is no one available that week. His line-up of guest to me at least have been somewhat disappointing and to be honest not the best for a premiere week. In fact for episode zero he had Jim Parsons on, I was wondering why he couldn't had been on the debut episode instead seeing as that could had been a more interesting interview. Not all of them were bad but it seemed like many were somewhat dull, a few I hadn't even heard of or seen the shows to relate to, Tom Hanks and Julie Bowen* were about the extent of who I knew. Now 11pm isn't an unreasonable time but I do feel the main issue there is the news, most of us do like to know what's going on in the world and would like to know how tomorrow's going to be. Luckily the news channel we watch has a 10pm edition with one of my favorite anchors. Conan's show does repeat at 1am but since that was not announced via commercials or other media outlets I'm more than positive people aren't going to set something to record or see the repeated episode and will watch the news instead. Also like Martini noted some people might not have the liberty of time to stay up knowing what they have to do the next day. Time issues aside I think one issue that people have might be with TBS itself, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that a channel that can only be accessed with cable and not just over the air? Part of the reason networks like CBS do great is because it can be viewed by anyone even if they don't have cable. I'm not saying that many people don't have it, but it's not a common channel like CBS or FOX which is something you'd turn on more. I don't think many people are wondering "what's on TBS right now?" Most of the shows on that channel are just re-syndicated episodes from other shows ie Famliy Guy and while this is not a problem per-say it can be a slow down for newer traffic and people won't be considering it for newer content as much as they do an offshoot for memory lane or a time killer. Also I was surprised not to see him on Friday as I think it's a good night to unwind and watch something funny or upbeat for those working all week. For me since Ghost Whisperer is no longer on I long for better Fridays still.
However we do need to keep in mind that this is only a start, every show in it's first season is made to help build it up and ultimately spread it's roots around between character development and familiarity. You cannot judge the quality of a show based on a few episodes, this mindset has seemed to have left most in our society as we now live in a world where by episode 2 if everyone is not pleased the show is gone instead of letting it run a proper corse to see how it will progress. I will keep on watching him as I miss being able to see something good at night before Craig Ferguson. Erin Kennedy, Conan, and Craig top off my night quite nicely.
*I only remember her from Ed and Multiplicity, I didn't know she had a new show.
