Weekend Receipts: Megamind Blues Itself To Number One
This weekend, blue was gold as Will Ferrel's azure-pated supervillain ruled the box office, while Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis' road trip flick came in for a strong second place. Tyler Perry's first foray into straight-up drama showed up at number three and amazingly, the oldsters of Red are still doing bang-up business at number four. Your weekend receipts are here
1. Megamind
Gross: $47,650,000 (new)
Screens: 3,904 (PSA: $12,082)
Weeks: 1
And just like that, Will Ferrell washes the stink of last year's bombzilla, Land of the Lost, right out of his hair. Color me surprised though, that even after this summer's similarly themed Despicable Me, people are still hungry to see an animated supervillain go good. Then again, kids are dumb. Shark Tale made something like $400 million worldwide, and does anybody really remember that thing?
2. Due Date
Gross: $33,500,000 (new)
Screens: 3,355 (PSA: $9,985)
Weeks: 1
A pretty strong opening for an R-rated comedy, but if you look closer into the tea leaves, a worrisome portend forms. It got a truly cruddy B- Cinemascore grade, which bodes not well for its future; it seems like people are wise to the fact that it's just a louder, dumber, less fun version of Planes, Trains, & Automobiles. Quick, RDJ! Get yourself to the Avengers set before the stink settles on you!
3. For Colored Girls
Gross: $20,100,000 (new)
Screens: 2,127 (PSA: $9,450)
Weeks: 1
This movie is a compendium of every black actress you know, delivering grandiose soliloquies at excruciating length for two solid hours. So, if that's your type of thing, dig in!
4. Red
Gross: $8,858,000 ($71,871,000)
Screens: 3,229 (PSA: $2,743)
Weeks: 4 (change: -17.4%)
Sweet merciful God, but this is crazy that this movie is still hanging in there in the top five a month after it opened. I swear this movie will still be charting even after half the cast dies of old age.
5. Saw 3D
Gross: $8,200,000 ($38,801,000)
Screens: 2,808 (PSA: $2,920)
Weeks: 2 (change: -63.6%)
SPOILER ALERT: It turns out the Saw was behind the whole thing. What a twist!

A little harsh on all five movies this week, Mr. Gaines? Not to offend anyone at Movieline, but I heard that a couple of these films were actually pretty good.
I will vouch for For Colored Girls! The rest, meh.
Yeah, when I was hitting "publish" I realized I was sort of sour on the lot of 'em, but frankly I didn't really enjoy any of them. And For Colored Girls is one of those movies where the viewers end up on one of two extremes, and I'm with Roger Ebert; I think the movie just got away from Tyler Perry.
