Baz Luhrmann Wants Every Actress Ever for The Great Gatsby

williams_short_120.jpgApologies to Rachel McAdams and...um, that's about it. According to Deadline, Baz Luhrmann has "shortened" his list of potential Daisy Buchanan's in The Great Gatsby to the following actresses: Rebecca Hall, Keira Knightley, Amanda Seyfried, Blake Lively, Abbie Cornish, Michelle Williams, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman. Luhrmann will attempt to get as many of these leading ladies as he can to read opposite Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby) and Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) over the next two weeks. If it were me, I'd pick Michelle Williams -- what about you? [Deadline]

  • The Pope says:

Yes, Michelle Williams could be very good; I've never been unconvinced by her. Another interesting candidate is Abbie Cornish. Although having said that, Cornish has sexy eyes... and while that is good, they do suggest that she knows a lot more about the world than Daisy's romantic naivety.

  • Christopher Rosen says:

FWIW, Cornish was my second choice. Williams just seems perfect, though, right? And she was dynamite with Leo in Shutter Island.

  • zooeyglass1999 says:

Willams (who is a great actress & has GREAT chemistry with Leo and every leading man shes played opposite with) or Cornish with Johansson a very very distant third. The rest of the choices are terrible.

  • Brian says:

It would be nice to have an attractive woman play Daisy, so no to Michelle Williams. The rest of the actresses on the list would be fine for the role.

  • Greg Palmer says:

Daisey is the woman the poor meek outsider loved so much he made a success of himself to return and "win her" for himself. However she is all beauty and nothing worth loving. Mia Farrow was perfect in the 70s. The perfect Daisey for the 21st Century is Megan Fox, beautiful to look at and inside as perfect and smart as a box of rocks.

  • Unamed says:

Blake Lively definatly, shes gonna be the next Kate Hepburn and loves Lurhman, watch her interview with imdb about 20 years. Portman will get offered the role but probably pass then Lively should get offered it. Not to mention ben Affleck loves her and is great mates with Leo, so if she wants it, and by the sounds of the interview, she would, she may get it for who she know, which is often the case in Hollywood.

  • Pamela Strangeways says:

Why was Kristen Wiig passed over? Her erotic tension with both DiCaprio and Maguire would have an audience in a sweat.

  • Patricia says:

I'm going to take the outside lane and say I think Amanda Seyfried would be perfect for the role of the delicate, pale, ethereal Southern beauty with the empty head.
But with that said, Abbie Cornish would nail this.

  • fritanga says:

Rebecca Hall and Keira Knightley are Jordan Baker types, not Daisys. Much, much too tall and worldly-looking for the lead. Michelle Williams isn't pretty or alluring enough (I have no idea how she's going to do as Marilyn Monroe). Cornish and Seyfried would be the best choices, actually.

top 3 choices: Portman, Williams, and Seyfried.
    bottom 3: Lively and Johansson
