The Greatest Trailer on Earth: The Last Circus Promises a Show You'll Never Forget

This is tricky. I don't want to spend too much time writing about the trailer for The Last Circus, because its images say more than words possibly could. That's probably why there's not a single line of dialogue in the two-minute trailer. But I do want to convince you to watch it. It's one of the most visually immersive, bizarre and oddly beautiful trailers I've ever seen. And it features a clown wielding a machete.

But, that's just in the first 20 seconds. By the end of the trailer we've been taken through a myriad of dreams and nightmares, all filtered through the veil of a circus tent. Alex De La Iglesia's film played to raves during the TIFF Midnight Madness program as well as Austin's genre film orgy, Fantastic Fest. If you're truly tired of hearing about the same nine movies every day, then give this NSFW trailer a look.

Verdict: Yes!

there's a difference between art and stupidity - this is just plain stupid. just because it's a foreign film that's off the wall with machete yielding clowns doesn't an oscar film make...

  • Uncle Ernie says:

Could I buy some drugs from you? Because as only Zeus knows I've never been that high try as I might. The greatest trailer ever, oh please! From what I've seen I wouldn't go see the film at gun point!

  • Blair says:

Sorry, Brian. But methinks you've fallen into the "It's in a foreign language! I'm the first to discover it! I'll call it 'The Greatest...on Earth" Trap. It's a trailer for yet another slasher "epic" for a film that's too schizophrenic to know that it's yet another slasher "epic." But A for effort.
Oh, and sorry to be pedantic; but you need an editor:
"...because its images say...." and "...in the two-minute trailer." Very Copy Editing 101 stuff...

  • The Winchester says:

That looks pretty spectacular to me.
    But I'm on drugs.

  • Optimus SubPrime says:

So... this is stupid. But vampire tweener romances and boy wizard boarding school adventures are not. Good to know what the people want.

  • Optimus SubPrime says:

The clown firing two UZIs . That one image alone qualifies it as the greatest trailer ever... good call!

  • S.T. VanAirsdale says:

You all know the headline is a play on the Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey circus tagline, right? "The greatest show on earth?" Also the source/title of the Oscar-winning Best Picture from 1952?
I hesitated to explain but thought perhaps it's in order before this descends further into literal-minded troll madness.

  • Brian Clark says:

I'll take the heat on the typos - stupid mistakes on a Friday morning. Fixed now!
But yes, as Stu points out below, the headline was a play on a slogan.

  • Julianka says:

    Awesome...God I hate clowns...lol

  • Blair says:

No, your Friday-morning mistake was becoming overly enraptured by this trailer.

  • Blair says:

No, your Friday-morning mistake was becoming overly enraptured by this trailer. As to the headline being a play on a slogan, OF COURSE! (And see my comment to Stu below.)

  • Blair says:

So nice, I posted my comment twice.

  • I predict this will come out better in comparison with any are predicting. We don’t want to jinx it when you are overly optimistic and the media need to lower our expectations so as to suppress the vote.

  • tera says:

I don't know...for me it's not the clowns, the machete, the blood or the bloody cleavage. It's the seemingly random Kojak reference.

  • Coyotl says:

Isn't the title of this film, "A Sad Trumpet Ballad?" Where did "The Last Circus" come from?

  • Brian Clark says:

Good question. According to Fantastic Fest Coverage, it's both. The Foreign title is Balada Triste de Trompeta, which translates to Ballad of the Sad Trumpet, but it used The Last Circus for the stateside festival screening. Because of that, and the fact that I could use the headline which everyone in the comments loved so much, I opted for The Last Circus
