Sanctum Trailer: James Cameron Brings Claustrophobia into the Third Dimension

Ever had one of those days where you're going cave diving in one of the least accessible cave systems in the world and then a tropical cyclone hits, trapping you in with flood waters and forcing you to swim deeper in hopes of finding a way out through the ocean? Yeah. The team in Sanctum is having one too. The film is inspired by true events and looks like it incorporates Executive Producer James Cameron's three favorite things: Diving, 3-D technology, and blunt, heavy-handed dialogue.

With Cameron's name on this, it's a pretty safe bet that the movie won't slouch in the visuals department. And indeed, the cave footage looks epic, wondrous, claustrophobic and at times terrifying. And unlike, say Jackass 3-D, Sanctum looks like a film that will be greatly enhanced by the new technology.

That said, for such a visual tour-de-force, there's a lot of talking in this trailer, and almost all of it amounts to blunt, tough guy posturing and no name actors trying to one-up each other while trapped in a life or death situation. Sure, the situation calls for some tense drama, but I'm hoping the film itself will speak more with images than dialogue.

Then again, this cave footage really does look amazing.

Verdict: You win again, Cameron. Sold.
