Would Mariah Carey Rule or Ruin X-Factor?

mariahcareyxfactor225.jpgIn this week's edition of scandalous X-Factor gossip, a rumor has surfaced that Mariah Carey will join Simon Cowell on the U.S. judges panel and supplant his assumed co-panelist Cheryl Cole. Yet another awe-inspiring chapter in Mimi's emancipation, indeed. But is a Mariah-fronted X-Factor a good thing?

God strike me dead, but I think this is fantastic news. Mariah Carey is one of the few superstars who won't skimp on candor or criticism when it comes to analyzing the singing contestants, and she'll probably be kind of funny, to boot. The woman has harvested a fanbase of "lambs," after all, and you can't get away with that unless you have a pseudo-sense of humor about yourself. She's also had major hits in the past five years (including the biggest radio single of the past decade, "We Belong Together"), which gives her a soupcon of credibility that American Idol panelist Jennifer Lopez could use right now.

And think of the professional experience Mariah can reference! "Honey, you have a good voice," she may coo to a raspy chanteuse. "But is your voice good enough to make Jermaine Dupri jump on the soundboard, gyrate, and cackle like a bipolar oil tycoon? Definitely not." I'm already craving her vicious barbs. "Girl, you really had a TRL meltdown up there," she might say, or "Son, please jump on a jet-ski and flee this world with Ma$e.

Cheryl Cole has been perfectly pleasant on the UK X-Factor (and she was adorable when mentoring last season's winner Joe McElderry), but for a pop star, the girl lacks fire. Mariah's got the magnetic energy, disapproving glance, and articulation to pull off the job. That already puts her five stiletto-aided struts ahead of Ellen Degeneres.

Sorry but Cheryl Cole is the only reason why I watch the X Factor

  • Jake says:

This is the BEST idea EVER! Not only will this immediately bring interest to X Factor (almost unknown in the US), but you are putting the person responsible for all of this contestants wailing their hearts out as their judge!! Who could be more experienced? Let alone she's like the best selling female singer ever and has like a gagillion #1s. I think this would be HUGE for the show and such a good move for Mariah's career! Who's Cheryl Cole again?

  • Bart says:

Courtney Love or Paula Abdul please. But Mariah would work as well...

I wasn't planning on watching X Factor since I haven't watched American Idol since I predicted Kelly Clarkson the winner on the very first airing of the show. But Mariah Carey? I am going crazy, completely excited about the idea of watching her every week. I love her. She's technically the only one that can rightfully judge anyone.
She'll be like: "Ma'am, I know you were thrying a D-7 but your voice will probably sound better with an F-5". She may even show them how right there. How exciting? Mimi teaching all them regularities how to be lotion, not ash.
