Did Bert Just Come Out As a Proud Gay American?

Bert2002.JPGForget Sam and Diane or Ross and Rachel, everyone knows that for the past 31 years television's favorite will-they-won't-they couple has been eternal roommates Bert and Ernie. And while the two have always seemed fine hiding their forbidden love from the other residents of Sesame Street, recent events suggest Bert has grown tired of living the lie and is ready to throw open the closet door. Maybe he heard it gets better.

Bert tweeted on June 11 at The A-Team premiere, "Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T's? The only difference is mine is a little more 'mo,' a little less 'hawk.'" Now, Bert may not be the hippest guy on the block, but he is smart enough to realize "mo" is slang for homosexual.

Bert's even been inviting some of his friends to the Street recently, with appearances from Wanda Sykes and a memorable Neil Patrick Harris playing the "Shoe Fairy." Maybe they can all work together and try to cheer up that miserable old queen Oscar.

I feel out of place here, reading this article and not having a shit-fit. Anyone else think some people are profoundly overreacting to this?
If you want to make a character gay, go for it. The double standards some of you lot are displaying are so repulsive it's actually hilarious. If you want to write an article about said character being gay, all the power to you. One shouldn't be expected to cater to those who apparently militantly oppose homosexuality and the tolerance of it being taught to our children. They are, you know, promoting *tolerance* and not the spread of homosexuality, you realize, I hope?
If you are one of those who completely lost it at this article, I would suggest to you to perhaps stop being so selfish as to expect media to conform to your own personal belief system and calmly navigate away from this page or anything else that you find offensive. If you want to boycott this show or anything to that affect, I encourage you to do so. But don't be hypocrites, blaming Sesame Street for having an agenda. You're all pushing one of your own - that homosexuality is vulgar and something to be ashamed of. If you're going to use the argument of what you do in your bedroom is your business, then the same should apply to heterosexual couples and so on. This is the double standard that I'm talking about and this is the hypocrisy. I don't believe two men in love should ever be ashamed, but some of you lot - many of you who have the gull to hold yourselves as superior or more pure - really ought to.

First of all lets all remember that the show was created for pre-schoolers who at that age should not have a knowledge or care about anyone's sexual preference. So whether you want to identify the characters as hetro or homosexual that is your own personal business. As with any relationship, ficticious or real, what happens behind closed doors stays there. When I look at Bert and Ernie, I see two friends that are there for each other no matter what happens in thier worlds...isn't that what best friends are all about and isn't that what the message should be to our children.

Let's see how's that christmas song go " Don we now our Gay Apparel...." So everyone is gay because WE ALL sing this song... People get REAL and GET A LIFE .

Does no one moderate these comments? I knew there were a lot of pathetic bigots surfing the web, but how they all made it to an inconsequential post about Sesame Street is beyond me. I sincerely hope these horrific excuses for human beings aren't raising children.

Get it right!! ERNIE sings the rubber duck song!! How can you be so judgemental when you obviously don't even watch the show?? So tell me, what do you let your kids watch....Spongebob? There's a great role model!! Oh I guess I was just assuming you had kids....sorry.

  • Some Guy says:

Since when is "mo" slang for "homosexual"..?! this author is really reaching... especially since it's a kid's show..

  • bobby jimmy says:

why is this important? this is not news worhty! there are people starving around the world, a war on "terror," and families losing their homes. it so sad that the best thing the writer could come up with is some thought of a fictional character coming out of the closet. we are wiser than the animal kigdom, but we have shot ourselves in the foot!

  • bobby jimmy says:

deb, what would be the point of sesame street having a gay character? not sure that every comment is based on hatred. some people are just straight-laced. perhaps they are just as opposing in their views on adultery or fornication!

OK this makes a lot of sense dude.

I live in So Cal and have heard "mo" used to reference a gay male many times, but I would characterize the term more as a slur than slang since it is usually used negatively. I doubt there is any connection with that meaning.

  • Cary says:

    mo = homosexual???
i know text messaging is constantly changing the format of the English language, but basing a story like this off of a thinly used, non-pop recognized regional text code is going too far - what is this ESPN???

  • anonymous says:

I am deeply disappointed that we continuously are trying to make child education programs gay. Why, why do they have to be gay? Are all males who are friends, gay? If I like purple, am I gay? REALLY?! If that is your lifestyle, fine, but don't force the rest of the world to be homosexual. I have absolutely no interest in that life style. Quit smothering me with it.

You people are sick and you should be ashamed of yourselves.

I fully agree with you. Why do some of you have to take something so innocent and adulterize it? Can't kids be inocent a little while longer? A four year old needs a trusted friend to help them learn. Not a labeled or exploited sexual preference. Frankly, if they were gay, we wouldn't be watching. My kids will have to deal with sexual preferences soon enough--but not today while they are learning their ABC's.Please just let kids be kids and let them grow up at their own pace. And please don't pervert our future generation.

this is retarded, sounds like an attempt to get views saying a kids show is exposing it's gay side. For one, i've never ONCE in my life, ever heard the word "Mo" used as anything, actually. So hearing it supposed to be used for the term homosexual sounds stupid.
..And besides that I see no other basis of homosexual act. Dumb.

Well, I don't see anyone pushing a 'gay agenda' (whatever that is), but I can't say I see the point in discussing the sexual preferences of a Muppet; unless you're REALLY REALLY high, or, if that Muppet actually comes out to proclaim it's sexual preference -for whatever reason - you know, like how the 'AIDS Muppet' is a Muppet raising awareness about AIDS. Maybe they will create some sort of ‘gay Muppet’ one day to raise awareness about homosexuality, to dispel the FEAR, IGNORANCE, and UNWARRANTED HATRED that so many people harbor towards their brothers and sisters over something as trivial and superficial as sexual orientation, and for no other discernable purpose or justifiable reason. 🙂
PS. I'm SO following Sesame Street's twitter now.

THis is the most absurd article I've read today *palm to face*

  • ShaneInNeb says:

I don't know...but the man in the tan van looking for an seems kinda creepy to me...;)

  • hthcfuyd ufdutdrt says:

.... Just because he said "mo"? What a pointless article.

  • Brighton says:

Apparently, you were in your cave when the purple TeleTubbie was "outed" by that fine upstanding evangelist (and prostitute supporter), Jerry Falwell. The "gay agenda" didn't START this BS about fictional characters and their sexuality. But now that gays have joined in, it's all of a sudden such a horrible act? Bite me, stupid bitch.

  • Brighton says:

Dumbass....It isn't "promoting being gay to kids". It's an article published HERE...NOT openly on Sesame Street. Most of the kids who watch it can't even USE a computer yet. Dumbass.

  • Brighton says:

Oh. My. Gods. Some of yo are just Stupid. Yes, with a capital "S". This isn't being shown ON Sesame Street. It's an article HERE. We got some stupid ass saying they'll stop letting their kids watch Sesame Street. Yeh, you should definitely be the one who educates your child. Others screaming the "gay agenda". Honeys, I'M gay and don't know about any agenda. You're a bunch of close-minded paranoid sick freaks who are no better, or different, than the racists who claim that blacks had/have an agenda against whites when they would do no more than gather and talk. Stupidity, obviously, is contagious among jackasses...

  • Brighton says:

It ISN'T being promoted on a kid's show!!! What aren't you people getting? And just for the record, thre are gay kids. Why SHOULDN'T there be a character that they can relate to on a tv show? Why should they feel even more alienated because YOU are offended? You are no more than they are. You have no right to deicde how they should live their life.
