Did Bert Just Come Out As a Proud Gay American?

Bert2002.JPGForget Sam and Diane or Ross and Rachel, everyone knows that for the past 31 years television's favorite will-they-won't-they couple has been eternal roommates Bert and Ernie. And while the two have always seemed fine hiding their forbidden love from the other residents of Sesame Street, recent events suggest Bert has grown tired of living the lie and is ready to throw open the closet door. Maybe he heard it gets better.

Bert tweeted on June 11 at The A-Team premiere, "Ever notice how similar my hair is to Mr. T's? The only difference is mine is a little more 'mo,' a little less 'hawk.'" Now, Bert may not be the hippest guy on the block, but he is smart enough to realize "mo" is slang for homosexual.

Bert's even been inviting some of his friends to the Street recently, with appearances from Wanda Sykes and a memorable Neil Patrick Harris playing the "Shoe Fairy." Maybe they can all work together and try to cheer up that miserable old queen Oscar.

Holy crap, look at these comments.
Look, Bert and Ernie as an ambiguously gay duo has been a joke and a rumor for DECADES. I remember it when I was a kid in the 70's. Geez, people, grow a sense of humor would you? We're discussing the mock gender preference of an imaginary person who is covered in yellow felt, with an orange spongy-oblong for a nose.

people who say other people are close-minded are stupid. You display an even more perverse example of close-mindedness. You want everyone to think exactly as you do, and when they don't, you show-off a very narrow way of thinking. Why don't you get a life a realize people can have whatever thoughts they want.....they don't have to be your thoughts about everything.

Make everyone think as we do, and when they don't, demonize them until America establishes the thought police and push to have them all killed.

I wouldn't be surprised. The sweater he's wearing in the image reminds me of something Mitch from Modern Family would wear.

  • Konic says:

The sad part is only the adults care about Bert's sexuality. The kids don't care and don't judge. Until we teach them to.

I'm just going to throw out a guess here....you don't read much fiction do you? How about movies and TV shows with gay characters? Should they not play them because it's not true to life, and about the character and not the script? Whoa.....

  • Mark says:

This is a kids show! What you think it's going to help the gay community because Sesame Street has gay characters on the show? Like someone said above, you think kids care about gay or straight? They care less! At that age they only care about what their parents care about, and whether or not their brother or sister is looking out their sides car window. And I can tell you that their parents wouldn't be to happy with someone else trying to teach their young children about human sexuality.

Not to distract from the discourse found here, but as a child I was certain Bert was a caretaker, possibly the uncle, of Ernie, a mentally handicapped child. That was my take on their relationship.
I hear Meryl Sheep goes lez after a few drinks, though.
