Weekend Receipts: Jackass 3D Makes Money Hand Over Fists To The Crotch
This weekend, a creaky group of friends who had been harshly weathered by age and by life gathered together again after many years apart to jump back in the fray, despite being far too old for such vigorous action. Also, Red starring Helen Mirren and Bruce Willis opened. Your weekend receipts are here.
1. Jackass 3D
Gross: $50,000,000 (new)
Screens: 3,081 (PSA: $16,228)
Weeks: 1
I can put it no better than commenter Winchester did when s/he said "The people have spoken: 'We Love Shots to the Junk!'" But, man! $50 million? Granted that's with the insidious 3D surcharge, but who knew that there was such a palpable yearning for such idiocy out there? Johnny Knoxville is already about to hit 40 and I think this insures that he'll be doing this well into his Ensure years.
2. Red
Gross: $22,500,000 (new)
Screens: 3,255 (PSA: $6,912)
Weeks: 1
Including Helen Mirren immediately betters any action movie she's dropped into and frankly, I wish directors had already figured this out. Imagine how great it would have been if she had been fighting Predators or teaming up with Machete to kick Steven Segal's ass? I fully endorse casting her as General Zod in the Superman reboot.
3. The Social Network
Gross: $11,000,0000 ($63,119,000)
Screens: 2,868 (PSA: $3,835)
Weeks: 3 (change:-28.8%)
I saw this again and was even more impressed with Justin Timberlake's performance. The first time was spent mostly trying to forget that he's Justin Timberlake, but on this go-round I could appreciate the subtle, snaky charm he used while still remaining vulnerable and vaguely sympathetic. A Golden Globe nomination I assume is in the bag, but I wonder if he could score an Oscar nom? If we can give one to Queen Latifah, surely JT merits one as well, right?
4. Secretariat
Gross: $9,503,000 ($27,517,000)
Screens: 3,072 (PSA: $3,093)
Weeks: 2 (change:-25.1%)
Sorry Secretariat, but you won't be this year's Blind Side. Perhaps you shouldn't have been so blatant in trying to score some of that sweet, Jesus Take The Wheel cash with that groomer character.
5. Life As We Know It
Gross: $9,200,000 ($28,865,000)
Screens: 3,150 (PSA: $2,921)
Weeks: 2(change:-36.6%)
Ouch. From a close number two last weekend to number five this weekend. Bummer. Katherine Heigl, looks like you're as beloved by America as you are by Hollywood.
