Help Tim Gunn Construct His Next Celebrity Slam!

TimGunnSuicide225.jpgWhen Tim Gunn slams the holy hell out of a celebrity, the world listens. Whether that's because his smackdowns are smart, reasonable and life-affirming or because he's unobjectionably lovable is unclear, but Gunn shows no signs of stopping. Project Runway's ultimate statesman just opened up again, this time calling out Lady Gaga's status as a fashion icon: "Who would want to emulate that? It's not fashion. Those are costumes." Now, that's not exactly an evisceration (and I doubt he meant to discredit her merits as a performer), but his barb has me worked up for his next big moment of "truth-telling." Who should Gunn call out next? Movieline has some suggestions and we want yours, too.

Katy Perry

Suggested quip: "Let me tell you, if I have to bear witness to one more starlet with cupcake breasts who thinks she's anything more than a glorified dessert tray, I'm going to scream."

Jay Leno

Suggested quip: "He never wears anything other than the staid, expected menswear of yore, and I have to say, it's telling of his bourgeois personality. It really is."

Adam Lambert

Suggested quip: "I balk at the notion that he is a provocative performer, when, really, he's wearing every cliche of 'fabulous' stagewear in the book. He's just a High School Musical character who spends more of his time in the drama club. I question his choices. Honestly, I do."

Katherine Heigl

Suggested quip: "She is obviously gorgeous. But she picks 'quality' films with almost laser inaccuracy. I mean, it's difficult to score a zero on the ACT, right? Pure chance should come into play sometimes? Not with this girl."

Michael Kors

Suggested quip: "This has been plaguing me for some time and I've only recently had the nerve to come clean, as it were. But Michael Kors's black blazers and black t-shirts? They're the nadir of fashion. He wants to criticize amateur designers and yet wear the bleak accoutrement of an elitist homosexual mortician? I shudder."

    These are excellent.
But I think Tim is making some mis-steps here. His whole schtick is some type of throwback button-upped-ness and politenss, above both the drama of the contestants and the pettiness of the judges. He represents a time when if you don't have anything nice to say, you don't say anything at all, or at least you say it out of the side of your mouth or through a back-handed compliment or accompanied by profuse apologies. His calling out of starlets, etc...I just want him to be above that shit.

I mean, yes, I concur here. He just wrote a whole book about "taking the high road," as he put it. But at the same time, when you've got a talent like reducing Taylor Momsen to mincemeat, I say seize the day.
