Weekend Receipts: The Social Network Accepts $23 Million Friend Requests

socialnetwork_rev_1.jpgThe hotly-anticipated The Social Network ruled the roost this weekend, hitting number one and finally giving Justin Timberlake a movie he doesn't have to be ashamed of. And, that's just about it, I don't think any other new movies opened this. . .oh, wait. Let Me In and Case 39 seemed to suggest that people aren't yet in scary movie mood, coming in at numbers 8 and 7, respectively. Your weekend receipts are here.

1. The Social Network

Gross: $23,000,000 (new)

Screens: 2,771 (PSA: $8,300)

Weeks: 1

Sadly overshadowed by the big splashy opening of David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin's tale of Facebook's founding, Thanks For the Add, Bro: The MySpace Story was released straight to video this week. And of course, Friendster! will be headlining the Manassas Falls Dinner Theatre this weekend until October 24th.

2. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole

Gross: $10,855,000 ($30,047,000)

Screens: 3,575 (PSA: $3,036)

Weeks: 2 (change:-32.6%%)

I've got nothing new to add, this is still the stupidest damned title for a movie that I can think of and it's all about OWLS WHO FIGHT.

3. Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps

Gross: $10,100,000 ($35,876,000)

Screens: 3,597 (PSA: $2,808)

Weeks: 2 (change:-46.9%)

Since Shia's admitted that Frankie Muniz could easily slide into any of his big hit movies with little change, I would love to visit the alternate dimension where Muniz stars in this movie alongside Burt Reynolds, Emilio Estevez and, let's say, Jodie Sweetin.

4. The Town

Gross: $10,000,000 ($64,307,000)

Screens: 2,935 (PSA: $3,407)

Weeks: 3 (change:-35.9%)

It saddens me to say that this was a pretty good movie, proving that Gone Baby Gone was not a fluke. Sad because this means I cannot in good conscience keep using Ben Affleck as an easy butt of jokes. Sigh With his white-bread looks and funny name, he was so good! I'll miss you, easy punchline Ben Affleck.

5. Easy A

Gross: $7,000,000 ($42,428,000)

Screens: 2,974 (PSA: $2,354)

Weeks: 2 (change:-34.0%)

Dear Emma Stone: You are awesome. I loved you in this movie and now you're gonna be in the new Spider-Man. But please, please, please do NOT go the Full Lohan. Don't drink and drive, say no to drugs, and stay away from those Glee kids, I think they're just bad news. I would hate to write about your fourth mug shot in as many years come 2015.

6. You Again

Gross: $5,552,000 ($16,437,000)

Screens: 2,548(PSA: $2,179)

Weeks: 2 (change:-34.0%)

Jamie Lee Curtis and Sigourney Weaver: you are so, so, so, SO much better than this. Kristin Bell, you are moderately better than this. Betty White, you are roughly as good as this. Odette Yusman, you have a wonderful agent.

7. Case 39

Gross: $5,350,000 (new)

Screens: 2,211 (PSA: $2,420)

Weeks: 1

Hey, check it out! Looks like Renée Zellweger is still alive. Looks like I lose my office pool.

8. Let Me In

Gross: $5,300,000 (new)

Screens: 2,020 (PSA: $2,624)

Weeks: 1

Twenty bucks says that the makers of the new English-language version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are nervously eying the receipts for this similar quickly-made-American-version-of-an-already-accessible-and-acclaimed-film and repeating their mantra "It's okay, we've got James Bond. It's okay, we've got James Bond. It's okay, we've got James Bond."
