Glee's Jayma Mays on Working with 'The Stamos' and Upcoming Musical Moments
Glee may not have taken home the Best Comedy prize on Emmy night, but at least Jayma Mays can console herself with a trophy boyfriend in the form of John Stamos, who'll be appearing as Emma's love interest (and Will's rival) over the next season. Prior to the Emmys, Movieline caught up with Mays to discuss the new character, what's in store for Emma this year, and what she'll be doing in the show's Britney Spears episode.
So, you've got The Stamos this year.
[Laughs] I've got The Stamos.
Which is very exciting, right?
That makes it sound like I've got a disease!
I think it makes him sound regal, like a king.
"The Stamos."
You can't just call him "John Stamos."
No, you can't. I think I'm going to start calling him "The Stamos." I'm stealing it!
So we're coming into this season and you've been with his character for a while already before we meet him, right?
They're already together, yeah. I think they've definitely been together for a little bit, and he's kind of helping her with some of her issues.
Which issues?
Her germaphobic and OCD tendencies. [Laughs] Which issues!
So the Stamos is helping you with your issues...
"The Stamos," I'm going to be saying that all night. Yeah, I think he wants to help Emma with that, so my gut instinct tells me we've been together for a little while. Not too long. Not marriage long, but we've seen each other a couple times [when the season begins].
Some people were concerned that Emma went missing a lot during the back half of last season. Was that because you were away filming The Smurfs?
I think it was a combination of a few things, yeah. I was out of town for the last three episodes, but that's very kind of you to say.
Everybody is talking about the Britney Spears episode. How much do you figure into it? I know The Stamos is in it...
Yes, The Stamos is in it.
What about Emma?
Emma doesn't have anything with Britney, but she does talk about Britney a little bit.
What does she think of her?
Umm...I'm going to make you watch and find out what she thinks about Britney. [Laughs] I don't want to tell you. But I didn't have any singing and dancing with her. [She dances a weird jig.] Because that's how I would do it, apparently.
Have you had any singing and dancing at all in the new episodes?
I haven't yet, but I hear that something's coming up.
So they give you a heads-up?
Sometimes. It's very secretive! They don't tell me anything, I just show up and do my work.
So you'll hear that you have a musical number from the press before Ryan Murphy ever tells you?
Yes, that's right! [Laughs] That's exactly right.
