Sofia Vergara and Rose Byrne Talk Emmy Chances and Favorite Scenes with Movieline
At last night's Breakthrough of the Year Awards presented by Crest 3D White and sponsored by Sensa and RealD at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, Sofia Vergara and Rose Byrne chatted with us about their Emmy nominations and played Movieline's favorite parlor game, My Favorite Scene.
For Vergara, the buxom Modern Family matriarch who just snagged her first Emmy nomination in the supporting actress in a comedy category (if she wins, she can put it beside her Breakthrough Actress in TV award from last night), the Emmys are an affirmation and a surprise -- though she doesn't have a guess as to who will win her category.
"You know what, I already think I won," she said. "Just to be going there, just to be able to be part of the Emmys and part of this group of women... for me, acting is such a new thing, and I never thought I would be nominated for anything. So for me, I'm good with what I got."
When asked to play "My Favorite Scene" and identify her favorite cinematic moment ever, Vergara offered a movie that would satisfy film buffs and MTV Cribs subjects everywhere.
"I love Scarface," she said. "And I think I love every scene. I've seen it a hundred million times. [Laughs.] But I mean... you remember the scene where he's interrogated by the policemen?" (The scene in question can be glimpsed in the trailer here.)
Damages star Rose Byrne is looking forward to the Emmys, too, expecting big nights for Glee, Lost, and Mad Men, but when sizing up her own chances against nominees, she's not so effusive.
"It could be Christine Baranski or Christina Hendricks, but who knows? It's anyone's guess. I'd say my chances are slim. Slim," she said. Then again, she's the only actress in her category who also landed a nomination last year, which should stand for something, right?
"Yes! The category's just so radically different now. I keep thinking, 'How am I still there?' But they're all brilliant. So whoever wins, it's brilliant."
Before she headed into the Pacific Design Center's auditorium to present the "Breakthrough Producer" award to Jason Blum, Byrne also revealed her favorite film scene.
"I'm going to be kind of pretentious and say Paris, Texas when Nastassja Kinski is behind the glass in the big purple mohair dress, and [Harry Dean Stanton] tells a story of their love affair and what happened and why it broke down. It's just so heartbreaking. The most romantic, devastating -- and then there's the beautiful music in the background, Ry Cooder's music."

Rose is so humble and sweet. She also has excellent taste -- that sex booth scene in "Paris Texas" scene was indeed terrific.
