True Blood's Theo Alexander On His Gay Vampire Sex Scene with Alexander Skarsgard

TrueBloodDenisTheo.jpgHow do you recover from a graphic vampire-on-vampire sex scene that ended with one nasty staking and screams that literally curdled blood? If you're actor Theo Alexander, you fly to Greece to unwind -- and edit the aforementioned sequence out of the bootlegged episode of True Blood you plan on screening for your mother. This morning, the Greek actor took a break from his two-week vacation to phone Movieline and discuss the sensual way he prepared for True sex, his fear of getting in touch with his "gay" side, and his character's 700-year romance with the King of Mississippi.

Did you prepare your family for the scene in last night's episode?

No. Actually, my mother will get the DVD without that scene. [Laughs]

What kind of feedback have you gotten today?

All of my friends and my fans loved the character and I'm really happy about it. I want to tell them a big "thanks" for all of their support.

What was the energy like on set the day that you shot the sex scene?

Well, I think that whole week, Alexander [Skarsgård] and I were both a little bit anxious, but we were joking and being professional. Alexander is a great actor, though, and he helped me get beyond the physical part of the scene. I had been afraid of the scene from the very beginning -- from the first moment that I held the script in my hand -- but I'm glad I did it because every time you face your fears, you move forward. It was a good experience at the end of the day.

What aspect of the scene scared you?

Well, the part about kissing another man. I don't really do that, so... I didn't want to think of him as a woman. Many people told me, "Oh, just close your eyes and think of him as a woman." But no, because that is a totally different energy and I had to be very present with Alex and his male energy. I had to open myself to be able to actually be attracted to him, like, really attracted to him. At the end of the day, it was fun, though.

How did you prepare for the big scene that day? Was there certain music that put you in the right frame of mind -- or alcohol?

No, no, no. I remember that I went back to my trailer and I concentrated. I did some acting exercises. I was playing the archetype of a lover, so I put on a sexy, slow song and almost did like a belly dance. I tried to get into the mindset of just being sexy and not caring about your sexual preferences and just acting on that attraction.

Kristin Bauer told us that she found Alex to be really uninhibited. Did you find the same thing?

I don't think any really truthful actor feels uninhibited, and I think that Alex falls into that category. It's all about the scene, the character, the art.

What did you learn about yourself from playing Talbot?

I realized that there are no rules and that you should not care what people think. You can have your own sexual preference. You can cook or you can kill, but you should just not care what people will say.

    It wasn't a 'sex scene.'
It was a kiss followed by a murder.
How odd that people can't tell the difference between sex and murder.

  • Javier says:

Who is this ignorant homophobic interviewer? Why does he or she makes such a big dude about a dude kissing and doing a love scene with another dude? It's one human being with another human being? Why would you ask him questions that try to evoke homophobic responses instead of matter of factly discussing a male-male love scene? It is 2010. Stop being so ignorant.

  • TurdBlossom says:

These "I had to prepare myself to kiss another guy" statments always irk me. Would you have to "prepare yourself" to kiss an Asian, Black or Latino? I get that this actor doesn't roll this way but it's no different than a gay person playing straight and having to kiss someone of the opposite gender.

  • A Greek afraid of kissing a man?!? Socrates is rolling in his urn.

  • Pat says:

Obviously you have to prepare yourself to kiss someone that isn't appealing to you, it's just the same as a young person having to have a sexy scene with an old person, just as revolting

    • Marcy says:

Ignorant remark. How do u know that different ages make for revolting kisses? How can u make such an idiotic remark? Shut y your stupid small minded mouth.

  • Michael Strangeways says:

    wow...that was a cutting remark...in 1993...what are you, 11?

  • Jenny M. says:

It was hawt! I loved that scene and wished they would have shown more than just making out and kissing. Like maybe some fake humping like all the straight characters in True Blood do, including Sookie & Bill do at the end of that episode.

  • B says:

I think all actors have to prepare for a scene - esp. if its one they have never done before because they are anxious and want their character to be as authentic as they can. If he hasn't kissed a man before - and he is recieveing dumb advice like "pretend its a woman", but instead he wants to try to draw on the right energy like he says - besides look who he has to kiss! I'dbe worried too if I knew I was going to kiss that gorgeous man!
I kinda thought the interviewer is a novice - trying to provoke things with the questions, and just as stupid is the usual weirdo's who comment such as 'Aids cures FAGS ' .......honestly, haven't you got better things to do with your day?
Anyways - I can't wait to see what happens now! Geez 'Eric' has some serious sh--t coming his way now!

  • MaryAnne says:

    Interesting interview.
He did a great job getting into the Talbot character.
I was thoroughly convinced that he was a gay Greek. You know, how Eric and Pam lapse into Swedish when speaking to each other. I thought it might have been funny if Talbot and Russell bickered in Greek.

YEAH DIMWIT AND A BULLET CURES THE LIKES OF YOU FROM INFLICTING HARM ON LOVING SOULS.1ST YOU NEED TO HANG BY YOUR BALLS AND THEN SLOWLY BE IMPALED.

  • Danielle says:

Honestly, if I were an actress, I would have to prepare myself to kiss another woman. You all can pretend to be outraged, but if you were supposed to kiss someone that didn't attract you in the least or the idea of it seemed foreign to you, you would do the same. The interviewer isn't ignorant. He/she is asking questions to a straight man about kissing another man in a TV show. Get off your high horses and get over it.

  • Danielle says:

Oh please. Kissing someone of the same gender for straight people is somewhat off putting if you have no desire to. It'd be the same if a gay person needed to kiss someone of the opposite gender. They would have to mentally prepare for it. Don't get so "irked" about the little things. There are too many big things to worry about in the world than statements like that.

  • Danielle says:

Replies like that don't help. My motto is to kill people with kindness. People like the ignorant person you're replying to just wanted to get a response. Maybe if people ignored stuff like that or didn't make such crazy replies like your's, they would move on and not be such trolls. You're only showing him/her that his intolerance creates hate from you.

  • Lara says:

I don't know why you lot are going on about preparing for such a scene because all actors have to prepare themselves for every single scene they do. If they don't then they'd be crap as they'd be playing themselves basicly.
I personally think they both did a really good job as they made it look as though they were sexually attracted to each other despite if it made them uncomfortable or not.
and to you gay haters, they're people just like you and me. There's nothing wrong with them and they are just as lovely as everyone else 🙂

  • I agree with Jenny M says:

The masterminds of this show likes to tease us (well at least the hardcore fan boys/girls) with such a hot, could-have-been, short love scene between 2 gorgeous men. I wish Eric didn't do him for revenge. lol. I can't wait for the DVD to come out. 😉

  • donkeyfur says:

I will miss Talbot on "True Blood." In fact, a lot of characters have been killed off lately. There will probably be more "untimely" demises, what with the nasty showdowns brewing between Eric and Russell as well as Sookie and the werechick (Debbie?).

  • janusdouble says:

Actually Talbot used a bit of Greek when he was angry. In one scene when he gets mad with the werewolves ruining his house he says, while climbing the stairs, 'vlakes' and 'ilithioi', which translate to 'imbeciles' and 'morons' in Greek. Talbot ruled, he was a fun character to watch. I miss him already.

  • trella says:

I have to Agree with JanusDouble.... I'm going to miss Talbot I was really liking his character. I can't wait to see what happens tomorrow!

  • David Rossi says:

You are so stupid that you mean it ? If you liked woman for real, you'd be glad there are gays, so there would be more women left out there for you. However, if you someone else's sexual preference annoys you, it's obviously because you have a problem with your own sexuality, mr macho man. And I'm not telling you are gay, just a frustrated straight person, maybe.

  • cutting edge says:

The "Aids cures FAGS" mouthpiece should be shot.

  • Caracticus says:

Yeah, well, let's not blame the interviewer 100% here... I'm sure there were more than 6 questions asked, but the editor or whomever saw a thread of "what's it like to kiss another man?" and "did you have difficulty getting ready to kiss another man?" and "did Alex say anything to you about having to kiss another man?" and so on... so if ya wanna put the tone of this interview on anyone, put it on Movieline Inc., not on the interviewer directly.
But seriously... having to kiss anyone to whom you're not attracted, no matter the gender, would require some kind of preparation... but then again, it wouldn't be called "acting" if you could only play romantic roles with someone you were romantically involved with...
and I 2nd the comment "it wasn't sex... it was kissing and a murder". You see more "sex" on daytime TV than that scene.

  • lovescenes says:

That was a brutal scene, I never saw it coming. Talbot!!!!

  • Straight and Proud says:

A lot of Fagot stuff in true blood, but its a great show despite the fairies (no not the sookie fairy kind of fairie, but the take it in the arse\ from another man fairy/fago) Anyways, these guys are good actors you know skarsgard isnt gay and you know this guy isnt gay, Denis is gay though...Bill isnt gay, stackhouse isnt gay well just about the whole damn cast isnt gay, even Eliis aka Lafayette is a straight man ACTING like a Homo. So.....sorry gay guys the show is written by a gay man who thinks that 1/2 the world or more is gay, and although he may be right. It isnt as big of a thing as you think. Most people are "normal" in that they setlle down, get married and raise a family with the opposite sex. But we sure do like to watch you flamboyant fags because you make us laugh and scratch our heads, then the show ends and we go about our normal everyday lives where a sqaure peg doesnt fit a round hole. Not where ever hole gets pegged....just because it can.

Remember....Everything is permissable, but not everything is benificial....Love true blood homos and all!!!
