Vincent Gallo's Coup to Have World Premiere in Venice
Remember Promises Written in Water, the film whose reins Vincent Gallo was said to have seized during its troubled early days as The Funeral Director? And which was rumored to be headed to a Cannes sidebar premiere in May? That didn't materialize, and now we can deduce why: It's debuting in competition next month at the Venice Film Festival alongside new ones by Sofia Coppola, Darren Aronofsky, Monte Hellman, Julian Schnabel and others. Read on for the full slate.
Not all of these are especially "news": Coppola's Somewhere and Aronofsky's Black Swan were designated weeks ago as Lido-bound, while you can always assume that any of the new North American premieres in the first round of Toronto Film Festival announcements will have their world premieres in competition at Venice. But Gallo is an intriguing development, meaning he could be Toronto, New York and/or AFI Fest-bound by the end of the year. Kelly Reichardt will be for sure, as will Takashi Miike, Francois Ozon and Tom Tykwer. More to come as events warrant...
