Comic-Con Liveblog: Thor, Captain America, The Avengers

The Norse God of Thunder and the All-American Super Soldier are Marvel Film's next big movie stars, with their action-packed films debuting next summer. But the lucky denizens of Hall H here at Comic-Con will get a sneak preview of the two heroes tonight. And maybe. . .MAYBE a glimpse of the whole Avengers line-up, including the new Incredible Hulk.

Fire up the quinjet and somebody put Jarvis on alert -- the Thor / Captain America panel liveblog starts NOW!

6:48 Captain America director Joe Johnston and cast members Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving take the stage after a quick teaser. In the teaser, FDR's famous quote of "a day that will live in infamy" and we see a quick glimpse of Chris Evans in full costume. He flings the shield at the camera and the crowd goes WILD.

6:49: Johnston says that the tone of the film will most resemble Raiders of the Lost Ark. From your lips to God's ear, Joe.

6:50 Weaving said he based his voice as the Red Skull partly on Werner Herzog. I bet he'll be flattered.

6:52 Johnston says that they decided to use Ed Brubaker's current run in the Cap comics as a touchstone. Boy, Brubaker and Raiders of the Lost Ark -- good parents to have.

6:55 Again, I sadly don't have a photo, but Chris Evans is virtually bursting out of his shirt, he's so muscled. AmericaStrong indeed.

6:57 They've only been filming for 8 days, so there's not a whole lot they can show or talk about -- except for this sneak footage.

6:57 A brief scene where a still-normal visaged Red Skull bursts into a castle in Norway in 1942. He kicks over a tomb emblazoned with someone that looks suspiciously like Thor and pull out a glowing cube -- a cosmic cube? -- and calls it "the prize of Odin's treasure room."

7:00 And with that, the Cap team is out and the Thor team is up -- starting with director Kenneth Branagh.

7:05 And here comes the cast -- Kat Demmings, Natalie Portman, Chris Hemsworth, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston!

7:05 Portman wanted to do another big, effects-oriented film if only to keep her "blue-screen muscles in shape," saying that it's a skill like any other, and needs practice like any other skill.

7:12 And then they show a trailer which blows the audience away

A disgraced Thor is banished from Asgard to Earth by his father Odin. He falls into SHIELD custody and beat the living crap out of a bunch of SHIELD agents, without his hammer. And in fact, he finds his hammer where we last saw it in Iron Man 2, but cannot lift it. A cut-a-palooza of the Warriors Three, Sif, and Loki, complete with his ridiculous horned headdress. And plus a fully armored, bad-ass Destroyer.

7:20 Branagh reveals that we get a glimpse of Don Blake, Thor's alter-ego, in the film. Interesting...

7:27 We're also told that Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, is under the aegis of Marvel Studios and the studio is working on introducing him into their shared universe. Honestly, he's had three films and each one bombed. Stop trying to make fetch happen, Marvel.

7:37 Surprise guest Samuel J. Jackson, aka Col. Nick Fury assembles his team of Avengers on stage -- Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk!

7:40 Director Joss Whedon is on-stage briefly saying "I once had a dream as a director -- and that dream was nothing compared to this!" The cast comes together for a superb photo op and vanish into the night.

7:43 And that wraps this Marvel panel up. I think every comic book geek is leaving the hall now to go change their pants, they were so happy. Have a good night everyone and Avengers Assemble!

Why doesn't Marvel wise up and revisit DR STRANGE? The old TV movie with Peter Hooten was OK, but with today's modern effects, the Astral Plane would really perk up! He was always my favorite Marvel character. Nice to see the Avengers hitting the big screen! Incidentally, Marvel really should re-release this old chestnut as a DVD. The old VHS tapes go for $50, already!
