Comic-Con Liveblog: Green Lantern
You've seen the costume, you've confused it with Seth Rogen's jokey hero, and now you're ready to learn everything you can about Ryan Reynolds' latest foray into superherodom, Green Lantern, including the just-released movie logo after the break.
So let all those who worship evil's might, beware my liveblog of Green Lantern's light -- starting NOW!
11:54 And we've begun! Green Lantern comic book scribe Geoff Johns has taken the stage. And we've got a vuvuzela in the audience. Charming.
11:56 They roll a quick teaser of the film -- a glowing green light, with a voice intoning over it: "Welcome inhabitants of sector 2184. Before you can be recruited you must be tested. The green light before you is your power. If you will it, it will glow." Reynolds begins to recite the Green Lantern's oath: "In brightest day, in blackest night / No evil shall escape my sight / Let those who worship evil's might / Beware my power...Green Lantern's light!" Then a quick cut-palooza of Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, an enormous-headed Peter Sarsgaard and Reynolds using his ring to make a giant green fist to punch out three goons at once. The crowd? They love.
11:59 And speaking of that noggin, Sarsgaard reveals that his head is "pretty big, about a hat size 60." Size matters, Peter.
12:03 Director Martin Campbell promises a very light, very fun movie. So to all those worried that all superheroes movie would be dark 'n gritty, post Dark Knight, we've been promised a lot of humor thanks to Ryan Reynolds.
12:06 Backtrack alert! Talking about the less-than-warmly-received costume, Campbell now claims it is a "work in progress," a phrase he repeats about 3 or 4 times. He says there'll be a black and green costume, but the white gloves are DOA. I'm curious what the ACTUAL finished costume will look like since Campbell is clearly aware that the Nerd Hordes were not pleased by the first draft.
12:09 Johns retells a story from a decade before where, meeting with Hollywood producers, they asked whether they really NEEDED to use a ring in Green Lantern. Cue groans.
12:10 And we've just been promised Kilowog in this movie. The nerds rejoice.
12:12 I'm not close enough to take a photo, but Blake Lively's dress makes her look like a PanAm stewardess aboard the sluttiest 747 ever. It's pretty weird.
12:17 Sharp-eyed seatmates have noticed that Ryan Reynolds is still wearing the green Power Ring on his right hand. He's so method!
12:20 Asked what they would dress up as for Comic-Con, Lively would dress up as Harry Potter, Sarsgaard would dress up as Captain America, and Reynolds would go as a Wookie "because I like to be cute AND dangerous."
12:22 Ryan Reynolds recites the Green Lantern's oath for the CUTEST LITTLE BOY in a Green Lantern shirt and the crowd eats it up.
12:24 Reynolds might have accidentally laid a huge spoiler on the panel, but Parallax -- the physical manifestation of Fear -- appears in the film. And as soon as he admits this, his face freezes up and blurts "Oh shoot, was I not supposed to say that?"
12:28 Reynolds reveals that, in true Green Lantern tradition, he will pass on his ring to whomever is lucky enough to have a golden ticket taped underneath his or her seat, and some random nerd seems to have the lucky ticket. Eh, give it to the SUPER CUTE KID!
12:30 And with that, the Green Lantern panel has ended. See you on Oa, poozers!
