New Mel Gibson Tape Unleashed in All its Ugly, Baby-Hitting Allegation Fury

mel_gibson_retire.jpgThe conversation about whether or not Mel Gibson's mainstream movie career is done for got even less complicated today: The actor-producer-director's sixth published rant at Oksana Grigorieva explicitly invokes the act of both woman- and child-hitting, Gibson's not-so-reassuring response to which you'll find in the NSFW audio after the jump. Be warned: It's bad.

To the extent we can make this an industry story, let's just say the career blowback for Gibson transcends The Beaver. Library values have plummeted. The complexion of the Mad Max reboot currently underway in Australia has changed. Even for a guy who could easily self-finance and/or distribute his own films for the rest of his life, the demand has brushed bottom with this doozy. Not to be dramatic about it, either: No matter what's admissible or what comes out in court, hearing a second tape in which Gibson doesn't shy away from domestic-abuse charges is enough to suggest that extended public censure is imminent.

Not to be insensitive either, because this isn't an industry story. It's about the combustibility of a relationship whose chemistry and dynamics we'll never know, and the casualties therewith. That includes us; he wouldn't be "Mel Gibson" -- actor, filmmaker, superstar -- if he didn't have millions of fans now left in the lurch. But God truly help anyone on the other end of the line from a guy like that. "No one will believe you"? Ugh.

"No one will believe you" is classic abuser talk. What a fucking scumbag.

  • Sweet Tap Dancing Christ, that was uncomfortable to listen to!
The only way I could feel less awkward right now is if I was a teenager again, and my parents walked into my room while I was looking at porn with my pants down.

  • You know what, S.T? Sometimes sites posts videos or audio where the post makes it sound like the subject is being crappy - but then when I listen/watch it, I don't get the same reaction.
For example, the M. Night Shamazzle (Hassenfeffer Incorporated!) post didn't come across as mean-spirited as your post would have made it sound. Defensive yes, but the interviewer came at him in a way where he had no other choice.
Then I get to this post by you, and decide to listen first. Turns out, you've completed hit the nail on its head with this one. MAN, that was awful! Granted, a few comments from her made it seem like she knew what buttons to push, but still!! After listening to that, I could see him walk up to her in broad daylight, and choke her to death. What happened to this guy?!

  • HwoodHills says:

The guy's got issues, for sure. But the media seems to be forgetting that she's setting him up here.
If he hit her (and it sounds like he did) he's a scumbag. But her repeated allegations of, "I'm saving my baby" (over and over again in each tape) and "I'm not asking for money" seem more than a little pre-planned.
I don't think she's as Snow White clean here as she's claiming to be.
And before any of you "I only see what I want to see" people say I'm saying she "deserved" to be struck, I didn't and I'm not. That's a scumbag move no matter what.

  • Bob says:

    Genius again!

  • NP says:

I don't think anyone's saying she's Mother Teresa, and sure she knew exactly what she had to say to set him off, but doesn't that just imply that she's remembering what has caused him to fly off the handle in the past, in private, when she wasn't recording him? I'm not sure _what_ you're trying to prove by what you're saying. Also, I find it strange that the line you draw is at hitting when there's such clear emotional abuse happening here (which is, you know, not okay either).

  • TurdBlossom says:

The lesson here is never cross a Russian Gold-digger.

  • Let me put it this way: I had half a mind to defend him after that first tape. Missing context, x-factors, set-ups, secret tapings, the consequences of losing his films as a director, which I generally like... there were just too many mitigating factors, too many open questions to determine a whole career was worth wiping out for two minutes on the phone. Not like you can justify that whole "raped by a pack of n***ers" comment in any context, but still. There was still too much we didn't know, and hell, couples have screaming matches all the time.
Then came the second, and the third and through to this... and you know, it's just indefensible. There's nothing you can say. I guess you can try to separate the work from the man, and I am quite curious to see what's up with The Beaver. But his toxicity irradiates everything, it can't be avoided. This is beyond losing a PR battle, too. You rely on an artist's interest in humanity, and if s/he evinces none, then the relationship is simply over.

  • Tom Christensen says:

This guy has huge issues. It the deeply rooted in his fundamentalistic beliefs, religious opinions and personality.
This is not just as passing state of mind that can be erased after a quick colonic at the celeb rehab clinic... and suddenly Mel is a new man.
This is Mel Gibson as a person. Even if he previously has seemed like a good natured lovable guy. He is - unfortunately - an extremely self-righteous pious hypocrite.
Remember this next time he promotes himself in public.

  • Ben says:

I come at it a little differently to that, S.T. If Mel had just said maybe ONE of these horrible things, calmly and rationally, then that would have indicated to me that he is probably an awful person. As it stands however his behavior has been so consistently and completely INSANE as to render any charge not guilty by virtue of that insanity. We're not just listening to a movie star here. We're listening to a human being suffering from a mental illness. The guy suffers from what appears to be a devastating, crippling case of bipolar disorder. No one with that condition, or any psychological condition, should have their private conversations taped and shared with the public. Sure, I'm horrified by what I'm hearing on these tapes. But I'm more horrified by what it says about public attitudes to mental illness that people think a guys career should end because of how he behaves when in a manic state. The conversation has all been about how he's a monster. Not nearly enough of it has been about how ANYONE can become this sick, and how medical care and compassion are the only solution.

  • SunnydaZe says:

I just hope he hasn't always secretly been like this. It would be easier to enjoy his previous work if one were to believe he underwent some drastic change in recent years. You can't hold a person accountable in their past for the way they behave in the present. People change.

  • Thoman Paigne says:

Mel Gibson is a clear case of bipolar disorder.
Also, he makes racisct, derogatory remarks about : Blacks, Mexicans, Russians, Women with breast implants, Okasana's "Pussy" son, Jew's, etc.
The guy is a dangerous, verbally abusive, bug headed racist and quite possibly a physically abusive monster.
I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to give this jerk a broken nose.
