Inception Stars Talk Sequel And What That Ending Means

On the red carpet of the film's L.A. premiere, MTV News caught up with the stars of Christopher Nolan's latest mindbender to see if they thought the film could support a sequel and to quiz them on their interpretations of the final scene, with one actor offering a very tantalizing clue. Spoilers ahead.Inception_dicaprioguns_225.jpg

Leonardo DiCaprio had a definite view of whether his character made it back to reality or was still stuck in a subconscious dream, but sadly did not want to share with the rest of the class, saying that "I have my own specific take on that final scene," but wanted to let audiences to interpret the end for themselves.

Cillian Murphy was just as tight-lipped, announcing that he "wouldn't want to give an opinion on that," and refusing to speculate on any chance of a sequel. Clearly, to get any good info, we're gonna have to go to the fourth or fifth leads.

And like manna from heaven, Lukas Haas has given freely of his opinion: "My take? I think it's real," he declared. And with Dom Cobb alive and well and lucid, that leaves the door open to a sequel, a sequel that could easily be made, says Haas.

But it was Dileep Rao, who played Yusef the Chemist, who gave the most fascinating clue and suggested audiences ignore their eyes, if just for a moment. "You know what, I'll just say this: Use your ears not your eyes," he offered.

I'm honestly torn on this -- on the one hand, his kids are still in almost the same position as he saw them last. And, though I can't recall, are they even wearing the same clothes as they were in Cobb's reoccurring visions? But on the other hand -- didn't that top seem like it wobbled just the teeeeeensiest bit right before the movie cut to black?

What do you think? Is it real or is it another dream? Did Cobb make it out alive or is he still stuck in the purgatory of his subconscious?

  • Hmm, Interesting says:

No, He is still in the dream. Remember the beginning scene of the
movie. He is in real life and speaks with his kids on the phone.
Wasn't his daughter older at that point? She didn't sound like a toddler
but maybe around 10 or 11. Also, the architect
girl leaves him before she sees how he gets out. You need an out or jump
according to the premise of the movie. What was his out?

  • Joon says:

His out was the time it took for the strong sedative to wear off. He just had to find Saito before that time was up, because Saito couldn't find his way out alone without Cobb, and without Saito to keep his end of the bargain he would be arrested at the airport.

  • ginelle says:

The part where he spins his totem and it falls before he calls his kids. "Use your ears not your eyes"- If you listen to his children in the phonecall, his daughter sounds much much older than his perjections of her when she says "Grandma says you're never coming back" I think his children are older in reality than the children he comes home to at the end of the movie. They're even wearing the same clothes as in his memory of the last time he saw them.

  • Drew Barrymore says:

You dont even hear the daughters voice at the end so there is no way to tell, the makers of this movie was extremely smart to end it the way he did or else their wouldnt be this huge fuss over it.Another topic is that when dom meets mol at the end he knows she wasnt real, she was a memory. Dom breaks all of the nessecary rules and teaches the architect them in the beggining.

  • Jenn says:

Its a dream. If you notice when he enters the house he looks around kind of like "how did I get here?" Which is the number 1 thing to know if you are in a dream.
Second, to all of those people saying that Ellen Page saw Cobb's totem so she can control it, the whole point is to know the weight. I mean Ellen saw Arthur's too, but he still wouldn't let her hold it. Cobb saw Ellen's. She never actually held it so she doesnt know the weight thus can't know how to manipulate it.
Also to the people saying that it was the first time he saw their faces, it was the first time he chose too. He had the opportunity to in Limbo with Mol, but he turned away before they looked.
I wonder if even Christopher Nolan knows how it ends, or if he wrote it wrote it with the thought that it could work both ways.

  • Jenn says:

Also the only way the whole thing could be a dream is if he only thought his totem was a top, as several times at the beginning it falls.

  • joe shomo says:

after the credits role, the spinning top falls down. Therefore, he is in reality

  • Totem Top says:

Surely possible that Nolan crafted the film so that several different views were equally justified.

  • j says:

Who cares? The "open ending" was a given after the fist 6-12 minutes of the movie, anyway.

  • Michael Puhlmann says:

It doesn't matter whether the spinning top falls or not since it is Mal's totem. Cobb is still in a dream in the last scene when he sees his children.
The next sequel will show that Mal is not dead but jumped to reality. Cobb realizes his situation and will have to go through another new process (probably the name of the sequel) to get back to Mal and his children.

  • Tina Williams says:

There is no sequel. All of the characters are stuck in one level or the next. Geez, doesn't anyone realize that no one 'made it back' because they all 'woke up' before they could? The troupe woke up in the van, but the van was on the first level of the dream. Not reality. I can't believe that no one in here realized that DiCaprio had been gone from his children for about two years, those children would have grown, wouldn't be wearing the same clothes and in the same position, and at the end, DiCaprio could hear laughing, but the children weren't laughing. Come on, people. Next time don't see the film when you've popped whatever pills you're all taking,

  • Lele says:

If you stick through the credits you will all see that his children in the end are actually older! In the credits you can read: Philippa (3 years old) and Philippa (5 years old), James (2 years old) and James (4 years old) 🙂 Plus, they're NOT wearing the same clothes, the girl is wearing a pink dress that is REALLY similar to that one we see but with a white t-shirt under it, and the boy is wearing an orange checkered shirt, different from the red one he was wearing when he was younger! I also used my ears, and the totem was making that particular sound that is about to fall. He's totally awake, I'm really hoping for a sequel, incredible movie

  • ian says:

if Mal was right then she would of kicked him when she woke up

  • Bill says:

You can use your eyes to figure out the ending. Cobb was wearing a wedding ring ONLY when he was dreaming.

  • Bill says:

About the kids: There were two sets of children playing the kids. The kids at the end are almost two years older than the ones playing the dream kids.

  • MikeN. says:

You can hear the totem spinning to a halt at the end fade-to-black, that's what "Yusuf" meant with "use your ears, not your eyes".

  • Christian H. says:

Use your ears at the airport scene. That vader-esque hissing sound the dream machine makes? You can vaguely hear it when Dom is going through customs or whatever. Makes me think he's still in the dream

  • alex says:

Isn't it all a dream. Doesn't Cob say at the beginning that only the dreamer or the architect who sets the dreams up determine what goes in them.
If this is so, - if you notice, - the very first scene in the film ( the lowest level, - not cobs dream at all) he see's his children. He wouldn't see them if it wasn't his dream he was in.
The comment made about using your ears and not your eyes, - could this be a reference to the theme music which cuts in at at the end. this is the music of
'non, je ne regretterein' BACKWARDS ! This music is used in the film to 'kick'
them out of dream state, - is this a message from the director that the opposite has happen to Cob, - he's been kicked into a dream state forever.
I don't think this theme music is used at the beginning titles, - I could be wrong but that's what i think.

  • Bhavik says:

Dom was actually in the REAL world. There is a simple reason behind this theory. In all the dream scenes you will notice he wore a wedding ring. However, when Dom was in the "real world" he was not wearing the ring. As you can see in the final scene, Dom was not wearing the wedding ring.
Furthermore, people who are saying the children are to young or sound different from the telephone call should review the movie. They actually sound the same as they did on the phone. However, the daughter does not say a word at the ending. Also, they are NOT wearing the same cloths as people have discussed. Review the movie and you will see the daughter was wearing a different shirt and the son wore different shoes.
It was a really good ending. Like I said, what gives the ending away is Dom not wearing his wedding ring 🙂

  • alrt says:

Seconds before the film cuts to the end credits, the spinning top wobbles, but the audience does not see it stop or hear it stop. This leaves the audience wondering whether all of the final sequence was perhaps another of Cobb's dreams rather than reality. However, in an interview on The Chris Moyles Show, Michael Caine stated that "[The spinning top] drops at the end, that's when I come back on. If I'm there it's real, because I'm never in the dream. I'm the guy who invented the dream."

  • Vladimir says:

I also thought of this. On the other hand, this one instant between her waking up and kicking Cobb might be ethernal in Cobb's dream.
Btw, why was Cobb so insistive about finding Saito? He would anyway wake up once the drug ceases.

  • Punkgenius says:

I looked at it as yes, he has Mal's totem in his pocket but that is not his totem. Dom's totem was his kids. Much like the top falling only in reality, same with his seeing his kid's faces. Just what came to mind while I was watching it.

  • andrew 1234 says:

everyone is forgetting two major facts: 1. fischer went down into limbo first. they had a full convo on level 3 before cobb went down after him. how much time passed in limbo during that ? cobb's ex couldnt have been in limbo untill cobb got there as well. and 2. cobb didnt ride all the kicks back to the plane. he just went from limbo to 'reality' . cobb is dreaming ;)..fischer will be a big part of the sequal if nolan chooses to do one

  • glasgow frankie says:

Yusef the Chemist, “You know what, I’ll just say this: Use your ears not your eyes,” he offered.
Forget everything you see and 'listen' only, to the spin top... once before speaking to his kids on the phone and of course, at the end.
    Then, you will know.

  • lesly says:

I really want to think that is was Real! But what's the whole deal that he was using Mols Totem!? This is crazy! But I love this movie!
