Does Social Network Spell the End of Aaron Sorkin's Walk-and-Talk?

aaron-sorkin-walk-and-talk.jpgSure, yesterday's trailer for The Social Network was creepy and superlative, but didn't it feel like there was a little something missing? I mean, this is an Aaron Sorkin-scripted production. Where's his trademark walk-and-talk?

If you're unfamiliar with the filmic device, Wikipedia describes it as "a distinctive storytelling-technique used in film and television in which a number of characters have a conversation en route," then devotes two paragraphs to the overuse of said technique in Sorkin-penned shows like Sports Night, The West Wing, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. (Left unsaid but implied is that his script for Charlie Wilson's War had its own fair share of walk-and-talk, too.)

But this Social Network trailer... why, it's composed almost wholly of some unfamiliar new device that can only be called the "sit-and-talk" (which doesn't rhyme at all). Sure, the halls of Harvard are photographed with loving care in director David Fincher's usual heavy browns, but everyone is either standing stock-still in them or crouching in their room in front of a computer, the unused hallway sitting empty in the deep background. There's a single shot of someone advancing toward the camera while talking, but really, it's more like Andrew Garfield rushing toward the camera while screaming. Not the same!

Had David Fincher finally broken Aaron Sorkin of his strongest motif? It remains to be seen: If John Edwards ever strolled down a Four Seasons hallway while having an uncomfortable conversation with Rielle Hunter about Dave Matthews Band's availability, I doubt he'll be able to resist the dramatization.

    How about "Perplexed and Text"?

  • CiscoMan says:

Knowing Fincher's love of the ever-plunging camera, the walk-and-talks will now feature shots that plummet down elevator shafts and through doors. In which case, they're still being rendered and didn't make the trailer.
