Will Devil Give M. Night Shyamalan His Chance at Redemption?
The Last Airbender handed M. Night Shyamalan some of the most withering reviews of his career (if not a terrible box office intake). As we all know, though, the director is fond of surprise twists, so could Devil -- the Paranormal Activity-ish new thriller from his vanity imprint The Night Chronicles -- give him a feel-good third-act reversal?
Directed by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (The Poughkeepsie Tapes, Quarantine) and produced by Shyamalan, Devil is about the titular hell lord, disguised as one of five normal people (this is like the dark version of that Joan Osborne song!) who are trapped in an elevator. In a cast of suspicious types that include Geoffrey Arend and Logan Marshall-Green, who's the secret demon? Can we safely suspect a surprise ending where it's actually the helpful Chris Messina, or (as ONTD sagely suggested) the elevator himself?
We'll see, but it looks like an unpretentiously claustrophobic thriller from the new trailer. Then again, I don't normally describe Shyamalan projects as "unpretentious," so we'll just proceed with caution for a little bit, OK?
VERDICT: Sold, for now.

It looks super creepy, but.. yeah.. caution.
Clearly it's the muzak.
M. doesn't NEED redemption as far as I'm concerned.
