Weekend Receipts: Despicable Dethrones Eclipse

despicable_me_225.jpgAs we make the clubhouse turn into the dog days of summer, it seems like we have ourselves our first bonafide surprise hit of the summer. Despicable Me made a stunning debut at number one, giving success-starved Universal Studios a small taste of the good life. Bumped down to number two are the glittery, goo-goo-eyed gang of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, while Predators comes into at number three. Here are your weekend receipts.

1. Despicable Me

Gross: $60,117,000 (new)

Screens: 3,476 (PSA: $17,295)

Weeks: new

Somebody better fetch Universal some smelling salts, because I imagine the concept of having a hit to them was so foreign, they might've passed right out. But I'm reasonably sure that the home of such box-office misfires as The Wolf Man, Robin Hood and MacGruber will be back on its feet, cranking out bombs in no time. How's that Zac Efron movie lookin', guys?

2. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Gross: $33,400,000 ($237,000,000)

Screens: 4,468 (PSA: $7,475)

Weeks: 1 (change: -48.5%)

Can I just tell you what a pain it is to have to write out The Twilight Saga: Eclipse every time I write about this movie, like it's some Norse epic poem or something? I'm tempted just to write The Twilight Saga: Eclipse: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire some days.

3. Predators

Gross: $25,300,000 (new)

Screens: 2,669 (PSA: $9,479)

Weeks: new

I went to see this thinking it was the new Mark Foley/Gary Glitter buddy cop movie. I was severely disappointed.

4. Toy Story 3

Gross: $22,000,000($340,200,000)

Screens: 3,753 (PSA: $5,862)

Weeks: 3 (change: -27.3%)

Toy Story 3 took a look at Despicable Me's gross, patted its head and was all, "Oh, that's just adorable!" and went back to brushing up its Oscar speech while sitting in its jacuzzi made out of solid gold.

5. The Last Airbender

Gross: $17,150,000 ($100,227,000)

Screens: 3,203 (PSA: $5,354)

Weeks: 1 (change: -57.5%)

Despite its plummet from second place to fifth place, Airbender crossed the hundred million dollar mark this week, and, when factoring in foreign box-office, may suprisingly end up turning a profit. Finally, a M. Night Shymalan twist that nobody saw coming.
