Mel Gibson Out at WME as Hate Tapes Released

mel-gibson-racist-rant.jpgAnd for your Friday news dump: Those nasty racist comments Mel Gibson spat over the phone to his ex-girlfriend are officially live. And they're... angry? In related news, Ari Emanuel has made it officially known that he will not have Gibson on his roster any longer -- officially, unofficially or otherwise. Raise your hand if you didn't see this coming. Hey! I can't see those hands!

The troubled actor-director -- currently embroiled in an apocalyptic break-up and the "pack of n***ers" scandal that comes along with it -- can now finally be heard on tape blowing up in spectacular fashion at ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. Dark as it is, it's tough to determine where Gibson's rage crosses the line into despair; there's something lost in his voice, or maybe it's just him catching his breath before the next sortie. Either way it's toxic and will not necessarily enliven your Friday night social rituals. Unless you are a lonely neo-Nazi, in which case off you go.

Curious timing, then, with word that GIbson is exiting WME. Of course, he suffered an arguably more crushing blow last week when his long-time agent Ed Limato passed away after a long battle with lung disease. The former ICM titan came along with the William Morris furniture after its merger with Endeavor, bringing his fistful of A-listers along with him. This despite Emanuel's vocal condemnation of Gibson after his anti-Semitic rant in Malibu in 2006, a bit of history that reportedly ended up with Gibson "not officially represented" by WME at the time of Limato's death. Interesting. Nikki Finke also notes that the star's departure is not officially attributable to Limato's passing, but rather the publicity fallout from his Grigorieva bust-up. The release of the tapes is not cited, but you know what to do with two and two.

Anyway! TGIF, Mel?

  • Old No.7 says:

Yes, but is Mel still invited to P.Diddy's White Party?

  • Furious D says:

Mel didn't help himself when they called him to tell him he was being dropped, and he replied: "Was it something I said?"

  • casting couch says:

He sounds like a drunk asshole... but a set-up drunk asshole.

  • kray says:

OK....lets see every racist remark said in anger by every black or hispanic celebrity be it in the music field, sports or movies etc. Please, blacks call White people Honkey's, Crackers, Peckerwood etc all the time but because you little faggots in the so called media are intimidated by the "ooooooooh boogie man" you don't say squat. Are you pussys really intimidated by blacks? Give me a break. Everyone I have ever fought (and it was more than a few) were pussies.....

  • MrsQuint says:

Do you think Mel asked Ari Emanuel to blow him first?

  • John M says:

    Call me.

  • sweetbiscuit says:

Having that photo of Mel (wearing a beaver) accompany this particular post is one of the many reasons I love Movieline.com.

  • DOUBLE STANDARD? says:

just another pure double standard from hollywood. basically, if you're white, anything you say, however vague, can be construed as "hate." but, if you're black, brown, muslim, gay, etc. you fall into a special "protected" class of people where you can do whatever you want and always get out of it by crying some form of discrimination.
remember when tom cruise got flack for jumping on oprah's couch? nobody said anything about martin lawrence walking around, brandishing a handgun, and screaming at tourists like a crazed lunatic on ventura blvd., did they? no, not all, just that tom cruise is nuts because he jumps on oprah's couch. idk, what's more crazy: walking around in the middle of busy public street threatening people with a handgun, or jumping on a couch?
see, it's always against the white guy, the black man gets a free pass. just think, if it were a black actor or athlete who threatened his girlfriend and said something negative about whites, we'd think it was just another normal day, with nothing to be alarmed about. but mel gibson? crime of the century!!! fucking hypocrites.

  • Milan says:

@ double standard, and you are fucking stupid! I hope you get raped by a pack of n*ggers. Fuckwad!

  • bess marvin, girl detective says:

That's it Double Standard! For centuries, the white man has been put upon, but never more, Mel Gibson is here to save the day!
    Switch to decaf, you loser.

  • Chris says:

Wow Milan - you sound like a genius with that beautiful put down of Double Standards' comments. Can we hear more of your insightful, constructive comments? Seriously though, Double Standard could not be more on target. I guess reading the truth set you off just a little. Just wait until the rest of the civilized, educated world wakes up and realizes that a revolution is needed to get things back on track. I can't wait. People like you will cease to exist.

  • Geoff says:

Him and Rod Blagojevich have the mouths of virginal altar boys. ROTFLMAO!! No, seriously they each need a 1-gallon bottle of hand soap poured down their filthy mouths.

  • Andrew says:

Mr. Gibson needs our prayers right now. He is a good cristian whom needs to get back to his faith. He is lost right now.

  • Marcy says:

It wouldn't even matter if they superglued his mouth shut. He's a bigot and has proved it beyond a shadow of a doubt. I knew something like this would come out, eventually.

  • Marcy says:

A good Christian? No good Christian I know would speak the way he did. It's obvious he's been like this for a long time and he let the world know. An apology at this point wouldn't even help. I think no one would believe he'd be sincere.

  • watdafuk says:

    PC=BS Mel for president.

  • SunnydaZe says:

Oh, come on! Mel's from Australia. What did you expect? Haven't you heard of "The Jackson Jive"? They are HUGE down under.

  • Mother's Little Helper says:

He sounds like he's strung out on coke bender. I suspect this is what OJ sounded like on that fateful night in Brentwood.
Makes me more likely to believe that he did punch the gold digger in the face.

  • Mack says:

I'm A black guy and I day give Mel A break. People sometimes say things in anger and passion that don't mean and they don't want repeated.

  • Mack says:

Sorry I didn't check my spelling on the previous comment it kind of makes me look bad.

  • MMM says:

Mel is a US citizen. His parents moved the family to Australia to avoid having his older brother(s) drafted into the Vietnam conflict, which they opposed.

  • CiscoMan says:

Nobody said anything about Martin Lawrence? Really? Then how did you hear about it? It must've been a loving update from the Martin Lawrence fan club that never once used the words "crazy" or "dangerous" or anything like that.
Mel Gibson said something really nasty. Period. Criticism is deserved. Business associates cutting ties from controversy isn't surprising.
Tiger Woods got caught doing something really stupid. Criticism deserved. Many of his sponsors dropped him.
Kobe Bryant went through the same thing (but has since recovered).
Really, I could go on and on. Few celebrities get a pass for bad behavior, and even fewer when it's hateful. Yes, there is a double standard against white people who use the N-word. If you don't know why, then you need to read a history book.

  • O.D.Cleaver says:

Kind of hard to defend Mel once he opens mouth and inserts foot. However, one should keep in mind how cool, calm and collected his girlfriend was on the tape. She was doing a bit of acting herself there.

  • Llisa says:

When Mel graced the cover of "Catholic Digest" a few years back, I said to my pious relatives "Be careful who you idolize." I saw him as a fanatic liken to Jimmy Swaggart. Disgusting. Those damn Catholics...

  • Beth Mahoney says:

This is truly sad what has happened to Mel Gibson in the last few years. His image was finally recovering from his last racist rant and now this comes out. I think his career is pretty much over at this point which is sad, because he was a very talented actor years ago..
