The 5 Most Stunning Emmy Snubs of 2010
No matter how much goodwill the Emmy Awards engendered by nominating Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton for Friday Night Lights, when Tony Shalhoub is still hearing his name called for Monk, you know there must have been some snubs. Here now are the Movieline-approved five most egregious. Set your outrage level to apoplectic and click ahead to witness the carnage.
· Community and Parks and Recreation are (mostly) shut out
As predicted here yesterday -- amid some truly tone deaf calls, like no nominations for Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison; whoops! -- Community and Parks and Recreation were pretty much ignored by Emmy voters. The critical favorites could only score two nominations -- both by Parks and Recreation (Amy Poehler's deserved Best Actress in a Comedy nomination and best theme song). For Community, that means a big goose egg. Though as snubbed-for-Shalhoub star Joel McHale said after delivering the nominations, "It's OK. I phone it in."
· Chandra Wilson fails to get a fifth straight Best Supporting Actress nomination
Mock Grey's Anatomy if you will, but one thing has been consistently excellent on the fledgling series for the last five years: Chandra Wilson's performance as Dr. Miranda Bailey. After four straight nominations and a season closing arc that played to the rafters, you would think a fifth nomination would have come easily for the Grey's star. Nope! And while it's hard to argue with the other selections in the category -- Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks, Burn Notice's Sharon Gless, Damages' Rose Byrne and The Good Wife's Archie Panjabi and Christine Baranski -- shouldn't someone have found room for Chandra? Lord knows everyone loves Hendricks -- but was she really that good on Mad Men this season?
· Ed O'Neill left out of the Modern Family bonanza
How'd you like to be Ed O'Neill this morning? Your hit show, Modern Family, just scored a Best Comedy Series nomination, while every single one of your adult co-stars -- Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Ty Burell -- all grabbed supporting noms too. Even Fred Willard got noticed as a guest star. But you? Nothing. Question: Does Modern Family even work without its twisted patriarch?
· FX series Justified and Sons of Anarchy forgotten about
Say hello to the snubs that made television critics spit up their bowl of Cheerios. With the exception of a score nomination for Justified, the two FX dramas were completely ignored. Maybe next year the Emmy voters can figure out what channel FX is on their cable system and go from there.
· The Late Show with David Letterman doesn't make the cut
Lost in the Lindsay Lohan-like FU jubilation of Conan O'Brien getting nominated for The Tonight Show -- meaning NBC will actually have to acknowledge his existence when they air the Emmys at the end of August -- is the fact that David Letterman was left out. And let's be honest: Team Coco or not, Letterman's Late Show was better than Conan's Tonight Show by a lot. Schadenfreude aside, nominating Conan over Dave just feels plain wrong.
But wait! What about Mary Louise-Parker, the stars of True Blood, Tracy Morgan, Friday Night Lights, Vincent Kartheiser, and all the other snubs? That's where you come in: Leave your favorite in the comments below.

It never ceases to amaze me how idiotic some of these awards organizations are. I mean, the grammys are totally clueless, but now the Emmys? Without a doubt, Justified & Sons of Anarchy are the best written & acted shows on TV; the characters are realistic, the stories are strong and Timothy Oliphont's performance in Justified is unique, original and exceptional. From the time they debuted until today, they've raised the bar of what's needed to be considered a quality tv program. That they weren't nominated tells me either the FX network didn't do their job in getting the Emmy people to notice them, or the Emmy committee decided to blow off TV programs that are gritty, realistic & that are not all rainbows & unicorns.
Chandra Wilson is an amazing tallented actress who should have been nominated! I saw her when she did that touching scene when she had to tell another co-worker that he was dying. Go check it out, them come back and make your comments. Give her a chance.
Loved Justified. Hope FX could do a regular series with Raylon going to different agencies with a new cast for six weeks at a time. That would keep it fresh.
Grey's Anatomy had the usual "Disaster Finale." But,What made this epi worth watching over and over was Patrick Dempsey's subtleness under fire and Chandra Wison's acting.PERIOD.SHE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SHE WAS CRYING IN A SCENE..She was panicked and it was so real, she felt wet and Mandy Moore as a great guest star bt the way told her "DR. B...You're Crying.!"Her frustration at being unable to help her resident who was dying and her fear when pulled from beneath the bed was spine tingling.Like someone said..GO BACK AND RE-WATCH ...CHANDRA..YOU ROCK!...BTW:Please Please just give HUGH LAURIE the emmy now.His portrayal of "HOUSE" is not only beyond superb, but better than half the OSCARS given to "movie stars."
John Noble - Fringe. The whole show is brilliant, captivating and engaging - and no one more so than John Noble and his extraordinary performance as Walter Bishop. The Emmy voters are crazy, or blind, or both.
Agreed, I love that show.
You are absolutely right! FNL is consistently superb. I'm happy for Kyle and Connie, long overdue in my opinion, but Zack and Taylor both deserved supporting actors nods. One more season is not enough.
like the article says, Emmy committee cannot find FX on their TVs. If they did, Julian McMahon, Dylan Walsh, Joely Richardson, Jon Hensley, and Roma Maffia would have been nominated/won for every season they were on the air...
I dislike that many shows that are nominated are on premium cable channels, which I don't pay for...I understand that watching eps on the computer makes every show more available, but I wish they would stick to shows that are in the basic cable line-up...or expand the list of nominations...
The Emmy Awards nominations have been made public! "Lost" should clean up and gets all the major awards!
I think it's not so much good acting as it is good writing where Aziz's character is concerned.
I watch it only for her. She's terrific.
I like the way you talk, Kristina 😀
Isn't much of that show improvised??
Yep. Take it, Wikipedia>>
"Like most episodes of Parks and Recreation, a great deal of the scenes in "Canvassing" were improvised by the actors. The scenes with Tom hinting at bribes and corrupt deals with developers was largely improvised by actor Aziz Ansari."
I agree - the only truly remarkable performances in the series are those by Ryan Kwanten & Nelsan Ellis. I love the series yet my favorite characters are Jason & Lafayette... they are the most complex.
Hello NBC executive.
Well hey, if it's on Wikipedia...
My family's fave drama this year was MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE. We're thrilled with Andre's nom, but how about the writers, director, Ray Romano in an excellent dramatic turn & the show itself?!
Nelsan Ellis in True Blood is almost the only reason I turn on my TV. His Lafayette is delicious.
"The Tudors" is by far the best show EVER on TV. How come they didn't get more nominations. And let's not forget "Weeds", "Justified", "Rescue Me" and "Friday Night Lights".
personally, I think every one of the shows nominated sucks (except True Blood)
Glee is f-ing horrible. I hate musicals though. I had to watch hairspray once and nearly died.
Mad Men: Don't understand why people watch that show. Could seriously care less.
FNL: Is there a more depressing show on TV? That melancholy music makes me want to stab myself in the eye with a spoon. Don't care about high school football in Texas. Don't care about Texas.
Actually, I think Parks and Rec is hilarious and should've been nominated. I'm with supporters of that show.
Justified was the best new show on TV this past year and got -ucked.
Chuck is my guilty pleasure. I consistently laugh my ass off watching that show.
The Office is still really funny, but it's fading a little.
30 rock is just not funny. It needs to go away.
Two and half men is completely lame. Charlie Sheen is a douchebag. The show sucks.
How I met your mother: Funny
Rules of engagement: Funny
Two and half men: Not funny.
Mock Grey’s Anatomy if you will, but one thing has been consistently excellent on the fledgling series for the last five years:
I don't think it's a fledgling after five years.
I don't understand why The Middle was ignored and that doofus who plays the husband on Modern Family (who is terrible in EVERY sense of the word) was nominated. The Middle is the first sitcom I've watched in years, it's consistently funny and so true to life for any average American family. I have NEVER liked Patricia Heaton in anything and I think she's absolutely wonderful in The Middle - they all are.
Love Christina Hendricks but I agree that she didn't do enough to get a nomination this year - she won't win so all it does is lose the slot for someone who really deserved it.
1. There should be a separate awards show for cable series, as it used to be with the Cable ACE Awards. Cable simply has different content guidelines than the broadcast networks. They both may be great series, but 'Mad Men' should not be competing directly with 'The Good Wife'.
2. 'The Late, Late Show' won a freakin' Peabody award, but doesen 't even merit a nomination by Emmy?? Shameful.
3. ABC's and NBC's comedies are dreadful. With the exception of Ed O'Neill on 'Modern Family,' none of the nominations for those shows is deserved. CBS did receive a number of comedy acting nods, but come on...no Simon Helberg? No Kaley Cuoco? No David Spade or Adhir Kalyan or Jason Segal?? No comedy series nod for 'Big Bang Theory'?? Chuck Lorre is the smartest, funniest man in TV, and he got snubbed AGAIN. I know '2 1/2 Men' is not everyone's favorite, but it is brilliantly written and acted.
Oy, I meant that Ed O'neill was the only one deserving of a nod on ABC, but didn't get one!! (the dude who plays Cam in 'Modern Family' is AWFUL, btw).
