Universal, Best Buy Endorse Cell Phone Use During Despicable Me

movie_mode_despicable_me_225.jpgSo there's good news and there's bad news regarding Despicable Me. Good news first, because we all need it: Some more information has emerged about the film, a 3D animated whatsit we teamed up to learn more about last week. Apparently it opens Friday, and now, not a minute too soon, there's some real promotion happening. The bad news: It involves using your iPhone or other smart-phone device while the movie is playing. But there's good news about that, too! Sort of.

According to a press release slid beneath Movieline's door this morning, the Best Buy "Movie Mode" app is a free download that will translate the dialogue of those little yellow "Minions" (so that's what they're called! Check another answer off the list) during Despicable Me's end credits. Which could be great -- if you'd rather watch your phone in the theater than watch the actual credits themselves. Regardless of which group you fall into (and assuming you intend to see this in the first place), expect to meet vocal representatives of the other side when the phones come alight in the dark near the end of the film.

To say nothing of the fact that the phones are most advisedly on during the movie, even though Best Buy swears it has the potential for disaster covered: "The application will also automatically disable the ringer, dim the screen and discourage texting during the film so as not to bother other movie patrons," the release notes. There's even this helpful video with an adorable, conscientious young child to help assuage your apprehensions! Or... not. You tell me. [Best Buy]

WTF? People slide press releases under your door? What, you boarded up your transom?

  • We had to close the transom in the NYC office for A/C! It's like EIGHT HUNDRED DEGREES OUTSIDE.

    Ah, I see.
p.s. This Best Buy "Movie Mode" app can only hurry me down the path to Never Leaving Home for Entertainment Again.

  • Martini Shark says:

Oooo, bad move. Those screens lighting up in theaters will throw off the 3-D effect.

  • Old No.7 says:

Is that screen grab from Paul Reuben's phone?

  • I do agree with the article. It really makes tons of sense. It blows me away at how stupid people are. On point, have ya'll seen the new HTC EVO? The phone is amazing. Not one of the HTC EVO review have been great, but still. I would for sure suggest taking a look at it. I use to work retail for Sprint Nextel, and none of the previous phone, the HTC Hero included, have nothing on this phone. My only problem is the 4G network. I hope it doesnt suck. Anyone used it yet?

Cell phone usage during movies is annoying, even if the phone isn't ringing or the person isn't talking. The lit up screens are distracting.

Rather extraordinary. It truly is truly remarkable therefore quick to create.

  • Nita Halton says:

I saw something about that on TV at the weekend. Thanks for putting more meat on the bones

Yes, they are rich and they can spend THEIR money the way they see fit. Incase you are not aware they do give back. They do not keep all their and look down on the little people.

  • I have happen to be looking around this board for about a few hours as a invitee. I found it incredibly educational and it has helped out a lot. I hope to stick around for a while and contribute

Lil wayne is finally back. Its refreshing that I can finally hear some good rap tracks on hip hop stations! Its not like he actually left since he still had a a hit with Right above it. Soulja and these other lame rappers are too soft for us. GO WAYNE!!
