Regis Philbin Accidentally Outs David Copperfield as an Illusionist Hack at the Daytime Emmys
Let's be honest about one thing: You did not watch yesterday's 37th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Ceremony. You might have tuned in if James Franco had been nominated for his scene-stealing arc on General Hospital and you would have at least TiVo'd the Las Vegas event had you known that host Regis Philbin would accidentally disprove David Copperfield's entire career during the first 10 minutes of the telecast. But you did not, so relive the night's most exciting and incriminating moment after the jump -- and congratulate the newest Daytime Emmy winners while you're at it.
Although Daytime Emmy producers skillfully edited around Philbin's gaffe during last night's opening act, audience members were treated to a fairly bizarre number, courtesy of the host's rusty memory. According to several audience member accounts, "the show got off to a bumpy start with illusionist David Copperfield making host Regis Philbin suddenly 'appear' onstage. You could hear Philbin say: 'How did you do it? I can't believe it,' while his lips weren't moving on his onstage image."
Below, the crafty editing that hid Philbin's mistake and this year's Daytime Emmy winners.

I'm sorry, but just because you dislike daytime unless it has James Franco on it, don't hate the genre and the awards show that is trying to celebrate what is left of it.
I don't understand. Why does Regis not moving his mouth in sync prove that Copperfield is a hack? Not sure what you mean. What was supposed to happen? What did Regis screw up?
David Copperfield is awesome. He is the best.
Gotta agree with Don't Be A Hater...I am sure you see your piece as snarky brilliance...but there are many who still love the daytime genre...no matter how much TPTB try to spin it otherwise.
We know what the industry..."the business" thinks of daytime dramas...but to get rid of the soaps is to do themselves harm since the best actors come from the daytime training ground.
Hey, Me: I think what you are to infer, from the sound not matching the video, is a classic tongue-in-cheek virtual commentary that other parts of the show's video were also 'played-with' and that the magic appearance of Regis was merely the cheap camera trick.
I hate to rain on your parade, JimmytheKnife, but what David did was definitely not a "cheap camera trick." I am a magician and I have seen David, as well as other magicians, do that style of production live. I think any magician would tell you the same thing, that it was not a camera trick.
I don't know what those edits were about, it could've either been a glitch when it was aired or Regis didn't perform the illusion right and David could've looked at the footage and told the network not to air it due to possible exposure.
I have no idea what the hell you're refering to here.
I saw the show LIVE...and again here in glitchy YouTube form.
What are you talking about???
Nothing went wrong with the illusion..and there was NO mistake.
By the way...what are your magic skills, credentials and knowledge?
And what a shitty..immature...and incredibly hostile thing to not only imply...but OUTRIGHT SAY: "Regis outs Copperfield as a HACK illusionist".
Not only are you way off base...you're way out of line.. with your bitter and inaccurate assesment of David Copperfield's talent.
However..I think the shoe fits here. You outed yourself as a hack and shitty writer.
Now...go make yourself disappear, jackass!

Julie Miller, it's clear that you've never worked in television. So what if the audio doesn't match exactly? It was live television, $h!t happens sometimes.
I know cynics (who are trying to create a name for themselves in writing) might jump on the chance to "expose" a famous person for screwing something up, but are you really implying that Copperfield didn't perform it in front of a live audience full of stars? Or better yet, do you actually think that they asked the audience to look the other way as Regis walked onstage and got into place?
Your story doesn't add up. And, it's in poor taste. Good luck with your career as a writer.
I was in the audience at the Emmy's, had a great seat and have NO IDEA what the "glitch" is! The show went off without any hitches (from the audiences stand point)ended on TIME which seemed to make everyone happy and for being a LIVE to air show was great! Regis was being REGIS! Over excited, loud and "on" like he is on his show...of which he too was nominated for once again.
I have seen David Copperfield perform several times and no this wasn't one of his HUGE Illusions, it was one that could be done on a smaller stage and one that would be fun for the room full of people from the Television world and fans like me there in the venue AND the viewers at home.
David Copperfield is an icon. How dare you try to impugn is reputation with your biting, nasty headline---that, by the way, has been picked up all over the globe. Judging from the reactions in the comments above, including those who were IN the audience, you're the one who's the hack. It's one thing to be a journalist and it's another to try to make your "name" and enhance your reputation by inventing schlock and smearing someone just because they are famous. Grow up.
All of you are jumping to immediate conclusions without REALLY looking at the facts. Fact #1. This illusion was NOT done in 1 continuous shot, there are SEVERAL camera cuts. #2. In the shot where the camera does a 180 & shows you a point of view from behind the panels, there are bright spot lights shining from behind the audience toward the stage & you cant even see the audience, let alone the seats AT ALL. Fact #2. Undeniable evidence that this was a combination of live footage MIXED with pre-taped footage by the audio not being right. So for the pre-taped footage, they filmed that before the audience got there, again, hard to DISprove since you cant even see the audience, heck there couldve been elephants in the audience & you wouldnt know.. & for the live audience, Regis is hiding behind one of the panels, & when DC shows front & back of one, Regis quickly sneaks to the other panel, than he shows both sides of the panel that he started out hiding behind, than REgis quickly sneaks 2 the platform, & wala!!! So all u haters need 2 stop jumping down this guys throat for having no "justification" for calling DC a "hack illusionist", because he couldnt be more dead on. PEACE!
David Copperfield is so lame.

This entire post is BS! I saw the thing, and there were no camera cuts. Secondly, David Copperfield has won 21 Emmy Awards and has sold almost 4 billion dollars in ticket sells. He's one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th Century. What the hell have you ever done in your life by comparison, except call one of the most successful people ever a hack.
So do us a favor and shut up. The author is an idiot.
