BREAKING: Robert Pattinson is Upset About This Headline
Look -- I couldn't agree more with Dixon's comments here the other day about sympathizing with Robert Pattinson. I like what little of the guy I've seen onscreen and in person, and I wouldn't wish ill on anyone just because they're famous or complicit in New Moon or whatever. And I get his and Kristen Stewart's frustration with the media machine that preys on their their every moody misstep. But to the extent I'm complicit in this very item, it might be as close to mutually assured destruction as contemporary culture gets. Someone needs an intervention.
The whole thing came up when EW asked Kristen Stewart about the blowback from conflating her aggressive-paparazzi run-ins with rape. For maximum context, here's the full exchange published today at EW's Hollywood Insider:
Did you see it all unfold and then think, I have to issue an apology?
STEWART: No, I was in Korea when it all got bad. My publicist called me and said RAINN had issued this terrible statement.
ROBERT PATTINSON: Who's Rain?
STEWART: You know, the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network.
PATTINSON: None of those associations came out and gave a statement [criticizing Kristen] without being called upon by the media first -- who were doing it specifically to get hits on their websites. That whole system of Internet journalists, where no one is called to account, is almost entirely about hate. All these people get away with doing it because they have no responsibility to anyone. All they need is to get a salacious headline and people click on it, because it's easy. And it's quite good being part of these Twilight films because you have to give so many interviews all the time, you can defend yourself. That's the only way. All of us stick together, as well. There are so many little nerds behind their computers, on their little blogs.
STEWART: See, if I said that? Crucifixion. You can say so much more than me. It's insane.
PATTINSON: That's not true at all. When did I say anything [controversial]?
STEWART: You're really good, but you could say, "I just took a s*** on the Queen's face," and people would be like, "Oh, I love him! I love him!"
There is so, so much here to contemplate (not least of all the Queen of England with a steamer on her face; "Remember the Gulf!," etc. etc.). But let me just keep it simple: How can two people so succinctly describe their enemies' M.O. -- while playing right into it? It's a big ol' migraine of meta, and at this point I can only imagine it's on purpose because the alternative would just be too idiotic. To wit, to invoke the blessing of "so many interviews all the time" as an unironic counterpoint to the curse of media scrutiny.
Anyway, Rob, I'm not here to be mean, and I wish you all the best. Nevertheless: Keep your mouth shut. You too, Kristen. And remember that for better or worse no one's paying you to act -- they're paying you to hear me.

Comments
those two should shut up and let Taylor give the interviews, the dude is so much better at handling the press
Sparkles said it best on the weekend to the NYT, "another seven[teen]months, and it'll be all over." We can only hope.
There are so many little nerds behind their computers, on their little blogs. Living their non-famous lives behind their little avatars. Cracking wise and hoping to win commenter of the week by insulting Megan Fox or Kristen Stewart who are actually the same person.
While I am living my GIGANTIC life. I mean, I am out there, you know? Making it happen. Taking a dump on the Queen's face and all. Did someone say Sky Bar or Dragon Fly? Did I mention I don't do heroin? Leo told me that stuff will kill you... I won't end up like Tom Cruise; who isn't on heroin but is crazy. Speaking of crazy> Tyra Banks is hot.
Next question.
And the wet dream of any PR agent who wants to be fired is...
Rob's got a point, a good point. He's calling a spade a spade. The bloggers should learn to take it if they are going to dish it out so much.
Mr. Pattinson and Miss. Stewart are right in many ways but it is a double edged sword, they need the media and detest the excesses of it at the same time. It is true, if you can't take it, don't dish it out. They are adults, granted young ones, but you do learn eventually that what you say has impact. Everyone makes mistakes and there are a lot of misunderstandings in communication in life. People take things one says differently everywhere. All you can do is, if you screw up admit it, apologize and move on, but remember in media world, all of your mistakes are semi-permanent and once uttered will be added to a backlog of information about you that the general public can pull up at any time via the internet. Gossip and screwing up and life in Young Hollywood has never before been so profoundly scrutinized nor so over blown and easily accessed or been possessed of such l o n g memories as in these last 25 years, and it shows no sign of decreasing on any level anytime soon. Granted, fame is measured in months in Hollywood, but really all you have to do is drive to fast, rob a pharmacy or say something stupid and you are front page "news" once more.
Did this little bitch just call me a nerd?
@JEFF
No, it was Pattinson...
...but maybe he is a little b*tch.
i have no problem with what either of them said, tho ks prob shouldn't have mentioned defecating on the face of the symbolic head of a foreign nation. as they get older they'll learn not to say a bloody thing b/c it's not worth reading the distortions and having to defend the nonsense. i'll enjoy their forthrightness while they have it though. i agree with rob. if you read his comments and think of perez hilton and the entire lot of individuals posting on his site, it's all incredibly true and poignant. perez shits on everyone from the safety of his computer, especially teenage girls, and then quite literally cries when he has to face them in person and they do it back (for example, scenario with fergie's guy punching him in the face- perez cries, hurls gay slurs, doesn't recognize his own hypocrisy, nor apologize for anything). don't get all defensive about it, just think about it being directed at someone other than yourself. it really is true.
truth really do hurts
I'm always amazed that people like S.T. Vanairsdale here get paid to write such self-indulgent nonsense and then go on to call themselves writers or journalists... I'm sorry about your delusions of grandeur: "Robert Pattinson, keep your mouth shut"?! Oh, did that comment about useless blogging hit too close to home for you? Poor thing. I did exactly what he said, I saw this headline before logging into my email and my amusement and curiosity led me to your rant. I like that you conveniently fail to mention that the myriad of interviews are part of their contract with the studio to promote these films. And of course young actors have to sleep with the enemy (media) so the people who hire them keep them on top of their wishlist. Few can make their own powerful choices thanks to their amazing talent alone (for which I can't comment on Pattinson, since I have yet to see a movie with him in it, though Kristen Stewart was brilliant in Into The Wild). Anyway, nobody can stop this celebrity-obsessed society anymore, but at least don't try so desperately to become one yourself.
S.T. Vanairsdale gets paid? I thought he did this out of kindness and love.... Color me jaded.
I have actually been following your weblog for a couple of mornings at this point and I really want to say that I definitely appreciate your style.
