Will Expendables Lose Its R-Rating?

poster_expendables_ver4.jpgSylvester Stallone's The Expendables is supposed to be a tribute to the R-rated action flicks of the eighties, but according to Hollywood Elsewhere, Lionsgate is pressuring Stallone to revise the film for a PG-13. Dubbed-over curse words and fight scenes that cut away from brutal impalings? Now it's a tribute to the USA network versions of the R-rated action flicks of the eighties. [Hollywood Elsewhere]

Lose its rating, lose its audience.

So much for counterprogramming Scott Pilgrim...

Kyle, you are consistently hilarious. I de-lurked just to tell you that.

    Nooo!!!
Sly, please, we need this movie to be Rated R! FIGHT FOR IT! PLEASE!

This would be the worst idea since taking dinosaurs off that island.

  • Andy says:

I hope not, because the tribute to 80s action and violence is one of the big reasons to watch it.

This should not be PG13 but it also shouldn't be some gory, bloodletting like the last Rambo. I'm a huge Sly fan but that kinda pushed it.
I hope The Expendables is an old-school, big stunt, wisecracking, gritty hand-to-hand combat action with the odd impaling or lost limb!
I also hope Sly brings some heart to the script so that it's not some empty explosion-fest. Sly's best films always had heart.
Still, can not wait to see it.
    Bring it on.

This is annoying but its not surprising given that the last Die Hard movie and Terminator Salvation were both rated pg-13 despite being sequels to movies that were rated R. These days there seems to be pressure in Hollywood to turn rated R action movies into pg-13 films.

I had hoped that the "neo-Victorianism" that began to grip the US after 9/11 would have faded by now (remember the insane reaction to Janet's "wardrobe malfunction?), and certainly with the change of government down there. Guess I was wrong.
