What's On: S-P-E-L-L-D-O-W-N
Oh, hell yes. The Scripps National Spelling Bee is back, and the stakes are high. The winning middle-schooler walks off with $30,000, savings bonds, a reference library, an unrealistically expensive Encyclopedia Britannica set, and a trophy the height of a hot freshman. You won't soon forget the sound of the bell that rings when a contestant misspells -- unless you've built a drinking game around that moment, in which case you'll cherish it and cackle along with me.
The National Spelling Bee [ABC, 8 PM]
For years, the National Spelling Bee aired live on ESPN at 11 a.m. Ludicrous! Criminal! Luckily, ABC rescued the event from basic cable hell and is again staging it in primetime. It rules. We may not get another awesome documentary like Spellbound from it, but we'll at least meet another memorable character like 1997 winner Rebecca Sealfon (E! U! O! N! Y! M!) or 2004 fainting phenomenon Akshay Buddiga.
Friday Night Lights [NBC, 8 PM]
Becky and Riggins foster a relationship just as Vince compromises his athletic potential by supporting his family. The Taylors and Landry reach out to Matt during a troubled time. And no one spells a damn thing, because this show sucks. Just kidding.
Miami Medical [CBS, 10 PM]
Miami Medical's going for the gusto tonight, staging their "massive car accident" episode just in time for barbecue season. Better yet, a hurricane starts to creep in on Miami, forcing everyone to evacuate. Sounds like an average episode of Trauma to me, too.
From Justin to Kelly [FX, 9 PM]
Silver screen icon Justin Guarini romances Kelly Clarkson in this tale of romance, spring break fun, and Simon Fuller's bad ideas. This movie came out even before Clarkson's single "Miss Independent" became her first big post-American Idol hit. However, From Justin to Kelly's coincided with Guarini's other big project: getting a ticket for losing control of a Ski-Doo.
