The Scott Pilgrim vs. The World Trailer: King of Kong

scottpilgrim_225.jpgJust as director Edgar Wright promised, once the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Facebook page reached 100,000 fans, a new trailer for the film was released to the public like a precious video game extra life. And if you like the Bryan Lee O'Malley source graphic novels, you're going to love this! Wait, you've never heard of the source graphic novels?

For fans of the Scott Pilgrim series, this trailer is like a fever-dream come to life. Between the comic-book touches -- notice the "ding dong" when Ramona rings Scott's doorbell -- and the ridiculously detailed video game aesthetic, Wright has captured O'Malley's schizophrenic style while simultaneously making it his own. And as Scott, Michael Cera appears to be toning down his inherent "Michael Cera" in favor of a more Pilgrim-y character -- i.e. a young man who acts like a brave and stupid dog. Toss in Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick and Alison Pill in supporting roles, and my ticket is already purchased.

But therein lies the inherent battle Universal is dealing with here. If you didn't already know what Scott Pilgrim was -- paging Jeffrey Wells, who seems to think it's a John Cassavetes-like verite film about an unstable woman and the crazy men she attracts -- would this trailer, with its obvious CGI and hipster sheen, make you want to see the film on opening weekend?

VERDICT: Maybe.
