Watch the Mystifying Trailer For Cannes Winner Uncle Boonmee
Sadly, there are no Monkey Ghosts or catfish cunnilingus in the trailer for Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, the Thai mindf*ck that won director Apichatpong Weerasethakul the Palme d'Or at Cannes on Sunday. But there are plenty of the lush, laconic images international moviegoers have come to know and love (or at least appreciate) in good old "Joe" W.'s baffling metaphysical exercises like Blissfully Yours, Tropical Malady and Syndromes and a Century.
The odds of Boonmee coming to a theater near you are about even for those of you in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, though no distribution deals are even rumored yet. For the rest of you, this is about as close as you'll get until the film lands on VOD and/or DVD. It's typically dense, cryptic stuff from a master who makes movies for exactly nobody but himself -- which was good enough for Tim Burton's Cannes jury to recognize him as the best of the fest. If they can dig it, so can you. (Hopefully.)
