Last Night on 30 Rock: Sky Law

damon_fey_30rock_225.jpgAs good as the season finale of 30 Rock was -- and as winningly charming and funny as Matt Damon wound up being -- there was something unavoidably disappointing about the whole thing. Because Liz Lemon's new boyfriend -- the seemingly perfect-for-her pilot, Carroll -- is played by Matt Damon, you know it isn't going to end well. And that's too bad. If there is one problem with the parade of famous guest stars on 30 Rock, it's just that: They're famous guests. Like Matt Damon is going to stop making movies to spend the rest of his career rubbing Liz Lemon's "disgusting foot secret?" No, of course he's not.

While Liz was busy finding love, Jack finally decided between Julianne Moore's Nancy and Elizabeth Banks's Avery... by not really deciding at all. Nancy wound up relenting when she found out that Avery was pregnant with Jack's baby. Because, sure. And because it's probably cheaper for 30 Rock to keep Elizabeth Banks around for a few more episodes than it is for them to keep Julianne Moore. But, hey: Anything that gets rid of Moore's Boston accent is fine by me.

Let's be clear - it is Julianne Moore's *terrible* Boston accent you want to get rid of. Because whatever you might think of actual, real Boston accents, what she is doing is bears no resemblance to the real thing.

Elizabeth Banks is becoming the "go to" gal for pregnant girlfriends...Scrubs was just the beginning of her lucrative career. I liked last night's ep, but you're right. Let's find Lemon a bf who is not some megastar and who can stick around and see this show to its conclusion (I hope no later than 2012). Julianne Moore was great, but her wattage was kind of wasted. I kinda liked Edie Falco in the Jack's girlfriend role.

    Thanks for clearing that up!
And, oh yeah, the real (not "terrible") Boston accent is just as inherently ridiculous. It sounds like a stroke victim being strangled with an extension cord.
And I'm not even saying that as someone who dislikes it, I just find it hilarious when my friends from New England try to explain why they don't sound funny. Lighten up.
Which is not to say you aren't right about Julian Moore being horrible on that show. The Nancy character consistently made me groan more than any character on TV.

  • As much as I agree that celebrity guest stars are distracting and fake Boston accents are just as annoying as real ones, I think the fact that Matt Damon plays Liz's temporary soulmate is a GOOD thing.
Why? Because it means that she will stay single and, let's be honest, that's where HALF of the comedy comes from. Are you really arguing that you want to Ross&Rachel '30 Rock' by having Liz fall in love and start-up a full-fledged relationship?
There is far better comedy to be mined from the dating front than there is in a long-term relationship (ever wonder why 'Seinfeld' worked so well?).
