By The Time They Got to Phoenix: Glee Cast Begins Tour

This weekend, If you thought you detected a certain high-pitched squealing coming somewhere from the desert of the Southwest, you were probably right. The cast of Glee kicked off its four-city tour last night in Phoenix, Arizona, and while the fans obviously ate it up with two spoons, critical reaction was a bit mixed.

Check out the full set list, videos from the show and a roundup of reviews after the jump. Just be sure to bring your passport and your birth certificate.

While the student body of William McKinley High were all on stage, flanked by members of the dancer troupe LXD, the adult members of the cast, Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison, were present only in pre-taped bits -- too bad, since a little old pro polish from Lynch could have kept the show running a bit more smoothly. The Associated Press complained that the cast kept slipping in and out of character, with Heather Morris staying true to form as dumb cheerleader Brittany, but Mark Salling introducing Corey Monteith on the drums, rather than Monteith's character, Finn.

The AP was also down on the relatively lackluster set of bleachers and dull costuming, calling it "evening that only a fan would appreciate." USA Today was a little more sanguine, noting the excitement felt by the crowd and the show-stopping numbers, including Somebody to Love, Like a Prayer and Don't Stop Believin'. In the words of fan Mikael Short from Utah, "If you think [the show] is good, try timesing that by ten or twenty." It's the newspaper equivalent of "Well, the kids sure do seem to be having fun."

But that's just the lamestream media; the fans lit up Twitter, YouTube and several other new social media sites that were just invented this morning, proclaiming the tour's awesomeness. And so did the cast! Montieth dubbed it "the perfect beginning to the tour, " and Movieline favorite Harry Shum called it "amazing."
