In Memoriam: American Idol's Michael Lynche

The American Idol audience is getting a hold on this "Vote out the right contestant, please" idea. Two weeks in a row, we've watched the correct troubadour saunter back to an awaiting womb -- last week jiving fetus Aaron Kelly crawled back into the one he calls home, and and this week Michael Lynche was forced to acknowledge his wife and their newborn. Tough luck. After the jump, we reflect on Michael Lynche's legacy with a fast funeral where Kara DioGuardi's tears don't seem as embarrassing.

Legacy: Mike used the Judges' Save to win an extra five weeks in the competition. I call this time period "The Worst Month." He made Kara DioGuardi cry with "This Woman's Work," and not because he wouldn't take off his shirt. He's got just the right amount of soul for a cabaret-themed Jell-O Jigglers commercial. His kid was born on speakerphone during Hollywood Week. His wife's celebrity cervix is still in the running to be the American Idol.

We Will Miss Most: The times he muzzled that falsetto and just sang the damn song. His "In the Ghetto" and "Hero" are two of the only great male performances this season. He also bench-pressed Aaron Kelly one time, resulting in birth goo on his suspenders. Don't underestimate wee Fetus the Magnificent -- he sly.

What Could've Been: A hometown trek to St. Petersburg, Florida where he receives the key to the city and Kara DioGuardi's official message to sing "The phone book, baby, you got it - Mad Love, K" during Top 3 week. His Top 2 performances of "(Untitled) How Does It Feel," "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay," and a world-exclusive Peabo Bryson track. More of his signature zest -- that "tang" that usually makes you say, "Who put handfuls of ketchup on this burger? I have diabetes now."

Closing Remarks: Big Mike, you utilized the Judges' Save successfully. You outlasted lesser talents like Katie Stevens, Tim Urban, and Andrew Garcia. But you also outlasted Siobhan Magnus, and for that I say, "Good DAY," and "Don't show yer mug 'round our Coke auditorium again, you hear?"

I have nothing personal against Mike, but it was a wasted save. He never had a chance to be in the final three. The save should have been there for the girls who typically suffer from the tween vote (kids with cellphones who can call and text for hours). The show is a snooze since Siobhan left, and I really don't care who wins at this point. It's really not a competition. Crystal is the only competent performer up there now. Lee is often off key and performs meekly. Casey is an empty hat vying for the cougar vote, as a singer/performer there is little to distinguish him from week one to now, Casey simply has not progressed and is often totally forgettable.

It'll come down to Bowersox and Goldilocks. I'm starting to think the producers are in bed with the hair stylists.

This season has been HORRIBLE! Ryan has been as annoying as a mosquito buzzing my face, the contestants as a whole "suck" ( by comparison to previous seasons), Ellen has added absolutely nothing, and the producers/judges influence has been clearly evident aka unjustified praise for mediocre performances as well as unjustified negative criticism for decent performances in hopes of generating greater competition. It is inexcusable to have Casey in the top 3...his talent level should have had him out somewhere near the top 7. One good performance does not justify top 3. The only thing that would have been a greater "kiss of death" than Simon's departure would have been Mike, the wedding singer, win. The producers spent alot of time and money following Mike and family exploits...why else would they have used a "save" so early when someone with more talent could have easily been voted off in the next few weeks.

I think this season's starting to wrap up as almost everyone had assumed...and next week will probably launch Lee and Crystal into the final two for the finale. While Casey may have a shot of breaking it up, it's looking tough unless things change momentum-wise quickly. Of course, there is also always a chance that we don't know who's really getting the most votes, but since Lee and Crystal have never been in the bottom 3, I'm going to guess it's them. http://thesmogger.com/2010/05/13/idol-hangover-the-three-to-see/

Casey is great looking, but he is not a great singer; and he should not be in the top three. Andrew Garcia, Lee and Crystal are the best three singers. I hope Lee wins; he is cute, down to earth; and has a great voice. Crystal is good but I do not like her song choices; and Andrew (top 10 finalist) has a great voice. I picked two of three to be in the top three. Most of America has gotten it right except for Casey and Mike; both did not deserve to be on the top five.

  • Pretty sure even Mike knew he was going home this week, especially once Casey was announced safe.

The whole point of this competition is to see contestants improve and that is exactly what Casey has done! He has mad skills on the guitar and other stringed instruments, can sing in tune, and has recently greatly improved his performance skills - no easy feat. On the other hand, Lee still can't sing in tune - a basic requirement for a singing contest, and has therefore forfeited his right to be the winner. The correct final two have to be Casey and Crystal and even if they were not the final two, guaranteed that they will have the most success of any of this season's contestants. Also, be on the lookout for Katie Stevens, who has a super voice and who will come into her own during this summer's tour. Mike will have the same amount of success as did Reuben Studdard who also had a good voice, but who lacked that certain appeal and charisma that it takes to make it big. Kudos to Reuben for losing weight and following a healthier diet than previously, but he still is not that great to watch / look at when he performs. Times that by 3 and you have what it is like to look at Mike Lynch when he performs. Kind of off-putting as he is so overweight and really a little sickening if I am to be totally honest.
