ABC Issues Statement on Modern Family's Lack of Gay PDAs

After installing Betty White as the host of Saturday Night Live (where she could finally live out her lifelong dream of saying things that are shocking because they are coming from an old lady), the users of Facebook are drunk with power! Their latest mission: getting gay couple Cameron and Mitchell to kiss on Modern Family. As the Facebook petitioning reaches a fevered pitch (and if you listen closely, it sounds like a bunch of insistent guests clinking their glasses at a gay wedding and looking up expectantly at the dais), producers issued a statement today in hopes of calming down the ravenously romantic masses:

Cameron and Mitchell are a loving, grounded, committed, and demonstrably affectionate couple and have been from the beginning of the series. It happens that we have an episode in the works that addresses Mitchell's slight discomfort with public displays of affection. It will air in the fall and until then, as Phil Dunphy would say, everyone please chillax.

Will the episode also explain that Mitchell's discomfort with public displays of affection also extends to his own home? As Phil Dunphy would say, I don't know. Ramin Setoodeh, feel free to weigh in at any time!

I think it's kind of adorable and unprecedented that mainstream fans are trying to force a show to be more romantically inclusive.
If only we had Facebook groups when Lord Of The Rings was out, Peter Jackson might have given us that Aragorn / Legolas kiss everyone secretly wanted.

On the one hand, I agree with the Facebook campaign.
On the other hand, the producers are right that Mitchell doesn't exactly seem like a PDA sort of fellow (he does have that stick up his ass). And having observed my same-sex-partnered friends, they do avoid PDA beyond hugging in public, and I've probably seen kisses a handful of times even in their own home (and definitely not of the tongue-down-throat variety). They were closeted for many years. And there's probably good reasons to avoid PDA if you are not straight too.

I don't think this is a major issue with the show since they've done a really great job with handling Cameron & Mitchell's relationship appropriately (and not stereotypically or offensively) so far. I guess I may be outnumbered, since the movement seems to be growing though. You know it's serious when it hits Facebook! Ask Betty White about that! http://thesmogger.com/2010/05/10/kiss-it-proudly-abc/
