Unaired Betty White Saturday Night Live Skits: Also Funny

If you thought you could get away from the wall-to-wall coverage of Betty White's Saturday Night Live appearance, here's some bad news: You can't. As Seth Meyers tweeted yesterday, White and the SNL Lady All-Stars (Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch), were so funny that the show had enough good material to last for two hours. Ever the opportunist, NBC has released three of the skits that were cut during dress rehearsal onto the Internet. You're welcome.

The first is the Rachel Dratch-led, "Debbie Downer." And while it will never get as funny as that first time with Lindsay Lohan, this was one the better outings for the recurring wet blanket, if only because of Amy Poehler: "What in the hot hell?"

Next, my personal favorite: "Bronx Beat" with Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph, which featured Betty White telling the world what yoga stands for: "Yeah, oh God, again." Um, yeah. Awesome.

And finally, the Molly Shannon-led "Joyologist" skit. This wasn't funny in 1997, and it's still not funny now.

Of course all of these -- especially "Bronx Beat" -- raise the question: Why weren't any of them included over the consensus worst skit of the night, "The Manuel Ortiz Talk Show?" No truth to the rumor that Alec Baldwin has already petitioned Lorne Michaels to air them when he hosts the season finale on Saturday.

Betty eclipsed David Caruso in the 'using sunglasses as a dramatic punctuation mark' category.

I've never enjoyed television more than this Saturday and I wish these extras weren't geoblocked through Hulu. What nbc.com does to my Canadian computer now is just wrong.
All hail the Lady All-Stars, maybe a Mother's Day tradition in the making? I know it's too soon, but I've joined the Carol Burnett hosting group on Facebook...

Can someone provide a link to videos for those of us who happen to not live in the United States? After all, this is the WORLD WIDE WEB!

Hulu sucks. It doesn't work on 64-bit Firefox in Linux

Betty White is a comic genius!

  • jacket says:

Please SNL, take note of your recent successes with Galifinakis and Betty White and start making more obvious comedy selections with your hosts. I get that Jennifer Lopez is a big movie star but that doesn't mean she's going to work for an hour and half of live sketch comedy.

I could probably do two Big Macs in a week. But meh on five.

I'm not exactly sure either, but I like her. Shes just always seemed like a cool old lady, I think part of the problem is that I had her mixed up with Phyllis Diller for many years.

  • While it's true that people tend to appreciate things more when they're gone, I think it's also true that there were some very very weak seasons of SNL. I love the current crop, I think the last couple of seasons have been the best in a long time. Example, Eddie Murphy was brilliant, the rest of that crew was not and the show was really bad when he left, it took several years for it to find it's groove again. Same thing post-Sandler/Farley.

  • Good blog! Happened to be having a look out there for a long time for something exactly like this process. And where did you grab the information through? Can you send a couple more citations for extra understanding.
