Super 8 Trailer Details Revealed: Close Encounters with J.J. Abrams

Lost in the shuffle of all the breathless speculation about Super 8, the double secret probation new project from director J.J. Abrams and executive producer Steven Spielberg, is the fact that the likely information about the film has been known for a week. Remember back to the simpler time of April 28, when Vulture reported that Abrams and Spielberg were teaming up for "a tip of the hat to [Spielberg's] movies of the '70s and early '80s?" Well, based on the just revealed trailer description for Super 8, that sounds pretty much exactly right. Spoilers ahead, but really: As awesome as it might be, it's still a teaser trailer. This isn't the last five minutes of Lost here. Just read on...

/Film has a point-by-point deconstruction of the Super 8 teaser, but basically here's the gist: In 1979, the Air Force closed Area 51 and moved all of its contents to Ohio. Because, of course. The teaser shows a speeding cargo train that gets derailed by a mysterious pick-up truck that swerves onto the tracks. Amid all the rubble, the camera finds one car intact and it immediately starts bending as something punches at the walls from the inside. Cut to the most awesomely simple marketing tag line ever: "Next Summer. It Arrives."

So, what will Abrams and Spielberg collaborate on? Assuming it isn't another version of The Incredible Hulk -- though, fingers crossed! -- Super 8 is probably some mix of Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. And there will probably be some daddy issues. But there won't be a Cloverfield-like Gila monster. Get your tickets now.

They tried giving Superman to Abrams.
His script was widely ridiculed and thankfully never got made.

This trailer looks incredible! In 2008, Cloverfield was the movie I could not wait to see on screen. I now know that next year's will be Super 8 for me. JJ Abrams is on such a hot streak right now, I don't know how his fans couldn't be excited. Aliens, Steven Spielberg, and JJ Abrams all rolled into one equal major summer blockbuster. The buzz that will build around this movie is going to be MASSIVE. I can't wait. More details and the leaked trailer is here: http://thesmogger.com/2010/05/07/super-excited-for-super-8/

My feeling on it, is that considering 2012 is around the corner and there's been a lot of talk about the end of the world and UFO's and aliens alike, my guess is that also because this movie is taking place in 1979 and JJ Abrams has always said he loved Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, is that he's doing a remake. Why? Because all these retro 70's - 80's movies are being remade in the last 3 years and Hollywood has been looking to what else they can remake. So all these odds and ends add up to Spielberg and Abrams doing Close Encounters remake, but with a new story and a new spin. Afterall, he did say he was tipping his hat to Spielbergs 1970's sci-fi movies, didn't he? What movies did Spielberg do in the 70's that were sci-fi? Well there was Close Encounters and then also ET, even though that was more 80's. So I'm guessing either a Close Encounters remake or a combination of that and ET.
