With that holiday quickly approaching, Movieline has compiled five matriarchs on television today that will make your mother's judgmental sniping almost palpable. So order an edible arrangement for the woman who birthed you and thank JC you didn't have to grow up with one of these ladies.
5. Celia Rhodes, Gossip Girl
Portrayed By: Caroline Lagerfelt
Both Lily's mother and Serena's grandmother, Celia is manipulative, cold and the person responsible for breaking Rufus and Lily up decades ago by making her daughter choose between her beau and her inheritance. She later lied to Lily and Serena about having a terminal illness to garner sympathy and also tried to break up Serena and Dan.
4. Colleen Donaghy, 30 Rock
Portrayed By: Elaine Stritch
Highly critical, affection-averse, overbearing.
Born into an Irish Catholic family that her son Jack calls "a bunch of mud farmers and sheep rapists," Colleen Donaghy harassed her son from a very early age -- blaming him for John F. Kennedy's death, trying to send him to Vietnam when he was 12 to "make a man out of him," and embarrassing him by forcing him to play the flute in front of his hockey team.

Even though Celia got into the drug trade later than Nancy Botwin, she is the far worse parent. She sent her eldest daughter (who later kidnapped her) to boarding school in Mexico, taunted her youngest daughter about her weight (calling her "Isabelly") and once replaced her daughter's chocolate stash with laxatives.

I asked my mom once... How did you do it? With all of us, how did you do it?? And she said... "you just get up and take care of your kids, get what you have to get done, done and sprinkle your love onto your kids"!! But again, there's a difference between Kate and my mom. She has help and my mom, she did it all on her OWN!! I know, that's an odd way to do things (lol) but hey, its what it was!
FYI, Kate is NOT the first woman to give birth to 6 babies, surprising, I know (lol) and she won't be the last. A few yrs BEFORE she did, another young couple did so and guess what? They didn't run out and get a reality show in order to "support" their kids!! Another shocker, I know (lol) but it's true!!! In fact, the dad went back to work!! WOW, what a notion huh? LOL
When Kate is really doing it *all by herself*, then you can make her out to be a martyr. Once she stops USING those kids to make money, to get fame, etc, then you can make her a saint!! Until then, IMHO, she's just a woman who had 6 babies with twins who went out and exploited her children for HER BENEFIT!! PERIOD!! Peace

Who's to judge Kate? I thought that was Gods job?
1. To start, comparing fictional Moms to 1 real one is not equal.
2. A fictional Mom can be good, okay, bad, or psychotic. A real Mom should be loving, present, & w/an aide to co-parent these little ones. A prerequisite: one w/morals & ethics!
3. Money doesn't guarantee happy children. Think of the Dionne quints of Canada years ago, their moves & pictures plastered all over for product endorsement monies.
4. Kate & her ex CHOSE to have a litter & exploit them. Never mind their first born. They must feel really unimportant. She & the octomom should've gotten sterilized.
5. She & octomom both love money, possessions, & publicity. Those distinctions can be gained by owning a pedigreed animal!
6. Raising children does NOTinclude selling their private lives on TV & in books. Think once again of owning a super animal for that.
7. I agree with many comments that she, & Jon, are selfish, maladjusted individuals who disasterously decided to procreate.
They are role models for vanity & greed.
She should be home, raising them with pride, NOT dancing in Hollywood, lying to them re: Christmas, posing with them on the beach in Mexico.If she only wants limelight, let the children be adopted. Let Kate resume/continue her immature "single" life.
The need a parent/parents who will be there for them. They aren't mature enough for the job. Children need as much stability as possible in an atmosphere that Instills love, fun, education, common sense, guidance, and hopefully some religion.

I am so sick of the Kate bashing and this writer is way out of line. Pamela Anderson is a mother. Why wasn't she bashed for being on the show. Brooke Mueller, the host, has four kids. If Kate is so horrible for being on TV away from her kids then every actress, TV host, author, politician's wife, business woman, flight attendant and any other woman in the public eye who has kids and jobs that takes them away for short periods of time needs to be put in the same vile contempt category. Bashing a mother trying to make a living for her family is a slap in the face to every working mother and the fact that this writer is a woman shows she either doesn't have any kids, doesn't have to work, and is a pathetic excuse for a woman. How dare you say that Kate Gosselin is a bad mother? She is working her ass off for her children since she is now their sole source of financial support. Your info that she left the kids for weeks on end while she was on "Dancing with the Stars" is just plain false. Would you write as negatively about a father who was an airline pilot or a film director or a military commander or a foreign correspondent? I admire Kate as a mother and as a woman. She did not choose to have a "litter" as someone so crassly put it - she chose not to have selective reduction, and those of us who are pro-choice have to respect that decision. The show started out as a one-episode documentary about a couple raising two sets of multiples. It was viewer response and interest that turned it into the most-watched series on TLC. Kate's ability to create an environment for her children that was both structured and nurturing contrasted sharply with the chaos of the Octomom's home and the brainwashing of the Duggars, where much of the older girls' adolescence has been spent raising the younger children (that, to me, is exploitation). Kate, I wish you a Happy Mothers' Day. You are a terrific mother!!!
A good mother stays home with her kids if she possibly can . And Kate has the means to stay home and she won't ..With her millions in the bank . The $20,000 a month child support.. And her RN degree she can support these children nicely .PLus a trust fund has been set up for all the children's college educations .She doesn't have that to worry about like most of us do.. What family has all this ? Not many . I have no respect for her as a mother..She thinks the more material things she can give them is being a good mother .But love and attention from their Mother everyday is what children need the most .They won't be little long and she will have missed everything .

Where do you get your information? Most of the money is in trust for the kids. Jon has no money to pay child support - she and she alone has to pay the bills. The salary of an RN wouldn't begin to support the family. Do you consider all of the men whose jobs necessitate extensive travel bad fathers? Are parents who send their kids to boarding prep schools bad parents? I hate it when women judge other women so harshly. There are stay-at-home mothers who are horrible parents - they watch TV all day, ignore their kids, drink, and feed them junk food. Kate might not spend as much time with her kids as she would like, but the time she spends with them is quality time. She feeds them nutritious foods, organizes enrichment activities for them, and keeps their lives structured. And she does NOT spoil them with material possessions.

Heres the difference. Madonna and the others mentioned (xtina aguillara) have talent. They SING for a living. Kate Gosselin has no talent and her career is in nursing, not show business. She should stop pretending to be something that she is not. She is motivated solely for the money. The kids are used to make the money and she prefers to be away as much as possible despite her denials on the subject.She will go down in history as one of the worst mothers ever to set foot on the planet!

This is exactly the type of false gossip that is contributing to the perception that she is such a terrible person. Jon Gosselin doesn't pay her a dime! He's unemployed. He also stole money from their joint account to rent a luxury apartment in New York City, buy a luxury car, take lavious vacations with his girlfriends and I could go on and on. That's fact, not gossip (read the court transcripts). And she isn't away from her kids as much as the gossip mongers say she is. So going back to work as an RN, losing their home, children's education funds, etc., 12-hour shifts at the hospital, are going to be better for the kids. Get a reality check! Kate is not supporting her kids - her kids are supporting her and have been almost since the day they were born!! Yes it is expensive to send 8 kids to college but the $30,000 Kate spent on cosmetic surgery, botox, hair extensions and who knows what else to make sure she looked good before doing DWTS would have paid for at least one year of college for one of the kids!! Anyone who thinks this woman is only doing the best she can is crazy - doing the best she can would be moving to a reasonable sized house that is not on ten acres of land and going back to work as a nurse. Jon is experience in IT and he could make a decent living so between the two of them they could more than adequately provide a good life for their kids!
UGH commonwealth of Pennsylvania just granted two not quite 10 year olds and SIX not quite 7 year olds work permits so they can continue to be paraded on tv.....way to go Kate...while Jon was not a perfect dad aka spouse at least the kids had time to wipe their butts!!!!
