Like a pregnancy test or gas station sushi, Mother's Day can go one of two ways: pleasantly surprising or life-changingly traumatic. With that holiday quickly approaching, Movieline has compiled five matriarchs on television today that will make your mother's judgmental sniping almost palpable. So order an edible arrangement for the woman who birthed you and thank JC you didn't have to grow up with one of these ladies.
5. Celia Rhodes, Gossip Girl
Portrayed By: Caroline Lagerfelt
Both Lily's mother and Serena's grandmother, Celia is manipulative, cold and the person responsible for breaking Rufus and Lily up decades ago by making her daughter choose between her beau and her inheritance. She later lied to Lily and Serena about having a terminal illness to garner sympathy and also tried to break up Serena and Dan.
4. Colleen Donaghy, 30 Rock
Portrayed By: Elaine Stritch
Highly critical, affection-averse, overbearing.
Born into an Irish Catholic family that her son Jack calls "a bunch of mud farmers and sheep rapists," Colleen Donaghy harassed her son from a very early age -- blaming him for John F. Kennedy's death, trying to send him to Vietnam when he was 12 to "make a man out of him," and embarrassing him by forcing him to play the flute in front of his hockey team.
3. Celia Hodes, Weeds

Even though Celia got into the drug trade later than Nancy Botwin, she is the far worse parent. She sent her eldest daughter (who later kidnapped her) to boarding school in Mexico, taunted her youngest daughter about her weight (calling her "Isabelly") and once replaced her daughter's chocolate stash with laxatives.

America's most famous reality mom has been exploiting her eight children since their birth, allegedly even faking Christmases to get an honest reaction from her offspring before revealing to them that it is not actually the holiday. Additionally, Kate has whored out her children's memories in a series of books and has left her family for weeks at a time to compete in Dancing with the Stars and complete book tours.

A self-absorbed woman, Charlie and Alan's mother Evelyn taunted Charlie growing up, telling him that since a penis never showed on his sonogram, she assumed he would be a girl. Charlie and Alan refer to their mother, who has a very active sex life and has been married three times, as the "devil." Charlie has her number in his cell phone saved as speed dial 666. While Evelyn planned on having her first son, Charlie, she told her younger son that he was "two pitchers of margaritas and a gas station condom."

I'm just surprised Kate Gosselin didn't rank higher.
When she augments that "two pitchers of margaritas and a gas-station condom" line with a reference to fertility drugs -- and you know it's just a matter of time -- she'll no doubt take sole possession of first.

The mother day is always a special day. In the World Wide Web are many ideas for presents, but I think flowers are the best. Other gifts do not have the same expressive strength.
No kidding Kate lacks NURTURING skills. While exploiting her litter she is demeaning, screaming, hitting ans seldom loving or kind. She was the same way with the childrens father. I won't say ex husband because she never treated him as such...she treated him like a servant. I realize this is in jest but all too true.
The other moms are fictional - so to speak and Kate is real, that's the sad part and sadder yest it's true
Kate is a good mother. Her children ended up in the show also because her exhusband agreed to it. I am confused why you all hate her. She is a good mom. You guys need to get a life. There would be no reality TV if there was not a demand. What role do you play in it????????????
I try to understand the critism regarding Kate....try to financially raise 8 children. First to be viewed by millions on everything you do, wrong, right or indifferent, raising one child and doing it right is hard let alone 8. Yet people admire entertainers like Madonna with her children, who lives with different men and is not criticized on how she is raising her children, traveling all over. Christina Aguilera, who just made a very racy CD...however, they are supporting their lifestyle.
Step back and think of how you could support a family of 10.
Lily Tomlin on last season's DAMAGES lied to her son so that he didn't know a girl he THOUGHT was his father's illegitimate daughter was in fact the son's daughter. Then the son had the girl killed as Mom Lily said "you had to." (To get money.) Worst mom ever.
Any woman who is a mother should stand up and support Kate for raising her brood, not to mention her very childish husband. She accepted the fact that she was having six babies along with twin girls and made it work. I dare anyone to stand in her shoes for a day and then criticize her. It's time to move on and find someone else to rip apart. Geez, it's Mother's Day, give it a rest.
I don't understand what makes Kate such a terrible mother, just because she supposedly doesn't spend much time with her children? I know a lot mother's who are in that boat. I was a single mother, with one child, independent/career woman, and there were many times I had to leave my daughter under the care of my parents while undergoing school/training, not to mention when I had to go overseas during my military career. I mean long stretches of time that I couldn't be with my child, it's called sacrifice. I never received any form of welfare or child support either. I busted my butt to provide the best I could for my child. She was the center of my universe. She grew up to be a very well adjusted adult. I just can't imagine raising eight children, where does Kate have the time for herself? In my book she is a remarkable woman and mother, and I sure wouldn't want to be in her shoes.
The founder of Mother's Day loved her Mom so much it drove her crazy.

Um...I see a major problem with this list. First off all these chicks (minus 1) are fictional tv personalities. CHARACTERS IN A SHOW. Kate Gosseline is a REALITY tv personality. Meaning her CHARACTER is the SAME as she is IN REAL LIFE. SO MY ULTIMATE POINT IS THIS. THe other 4, arent bad mothers just bad characters.
KATE on the other hand is just plain garbage all around.

It's confirmed. The majority of you are out of your minds. Kate is NOT a bad mother, but like any publicity, lies mean sales.
Kate is the most consistant mother on t.v. She keeps a very organized home...a MUST with kids, especially 8. Her energy level is overwhelming. NOT once did I see Jon 'pitch in' just because it's the normal thing to do. Kate had to 'constantly' ask him to do things that any regular dad would automatically consider doing. He'd respond with pure laziness & indifference to Kate AND the kids. Through the years I've known people with no kids that weren't as organized as Kate; a must with a large household. I used to be that way, but now, in my older age, I can't find anything because I don't know where I put it.
I vote Kate the NUMBER ONE greatest mom ever.
LASTLY, if any of you think or even dare think that she's abusive, I urge you to look in the mirror as you definitely are talking about yourself.....AND, no thanks to Jon, when the kids grow up to become doc's lawyers, whatever, they can thank Kate.
This writer's inclusion of Kate Gosselin among a list of fictitious mothers shows incredibly poor judgment. Kate is a real mother, with real financial responsibilities, trying to get by in the real world. If we are going to look down on Kate for hiring caretakers or recruiting family to watch over her children while she works, then all the actors, professionals, politicians, and others whose jobs take them away from their families must also be included on this list of bad mothers. I recently had to take a job out of my home state to be able to financially support my family and allow my children to finish their school years in their home town. Perhaps I'll be on next month's list for Father's Day.
As far as criticizing Kate for selling her family's stories in books, such comments coming from a writer seem incredibly hypocritical. All writers know that there would be no sale if there were no market. Why is selling stories of one's own life experiences "whoring", yet we should consider selling one's opinions in an article such as this any more legitimate?
Elaine Stritch made me howl with laughter many years ago in a comedy with Donald Sinden. An American treasure! Gosselin? A selfish woman whose ambitions will be thwarted by lack of personality,inability to communicate and a whining character. Is she about done yet?

You have to be joking right? If not than your a f**king idiot, Kate is noting but an attention whore. My dad was orphaned at age 8 and had to help take care of 7 siblings when my great aunt ( who never married) took them in and this was in Colombia. She just worked her ass off to come to America and raise her nieces and nephews, sure it was hard as hell but she loved her family. I just don't get what so goddamn special about Kate, who cares that she had all 6 kids at once. Is that how you get famous now? how many people I can shoot out my crotch, it's just sad. I also have a family friend who has 9 kids and lives on a teaching salary foe gods sake! Kate does this to live the lifestyle she wants, the nannies, tanning, cosmetic surgery, etc.. I just don't believe the crap that she "has to do for the kids." The sad thing is that reality child star do not even have the same rights as child stars, the parents can exploit them and then take all of their money for themselves. I'm sure Kate won't do that but who knows ever where I turn I see Kate by herself lately getting some new hairstyle or fake tan. It pisses me off cause there are some real talented people out there and people doing tremendous work to help inprove the lives of others, they deserve the spotlight a hell of a lot more than Kate, who is a star because she has to many kids? Of the 5 listed above, Kate is absolutely the worst...her mean, self-centered & calculating attitude are real...do I think she's ugly..no..not until you've seen her & heard her in action. Yuk!
