Evan Lysacek Talks to Movieline About Dancing with the Stars and Johnny Weir's Opinions

Which would you rather do, broadcast or acting?

I feel like I'm pretty much an athlete through and through. So it'd be an adjustment to do either one. I've never really had much experience in either, so I'd have to see what I'm good at. I usually enjoy what I'm good at.

Well, you were funny in Skate Great.

Yeah, that was just fun. It was definitely an interesting experience for me. I told them right off the bat I had no acting experience, and they wanted me to do it anyway. I really did enjoy it, but it was a long time ago. When I do something, I like to do it 100%. If that was my next goal, I'd really dedicate my attention to that. I usually set a goal and plot how I'm going to achieve it. I need the time to sit down and do that.

Was it really that old?

I want to say that was in 2007, maybe? 2006? Late 2006?

How do you like living in LA? You're a Chicago suburbanite originally.

Oh, it's my home now. I've been here for almost eight years, so it's definitely home for me and where all my friends are. I wish I was there a little bit more, but I enjoy traveling and being busy so I'm thankful for the work.

When you made the comment to Anna about wanting to hear her speak in a thicker Russian accent, it reminded me of -- wait for it -- Johnny Weir. Is it annoying to be compared to him? Is it annoying that people seem to want to compare you?

People I know really don't compare us anymore, without sounding -- [Laughs] -- that's a negative thing to say. We're in two different worlds now. My partner is funny, though: We have a good time together. She's definitely an American, she lives in Southern California. We have a really good time together.

What did you make of Johnny Weir's insinuations on Chelsea Lately? Do you expect those kinds of digs from him?

I have unfortunately not seen that particular show.

Really? You didn't look it up? He had a couple of barbs there.

Unfortunately I'm so busy I don't get to see too much TV. But I'm sure he was great. And I didn't know he was acting, but that's great for him.

I've recently been acquainted with your modeling portfolio. What's that kind of work like for you? Will you be doing more of that in the future?

When I was signed with DNA models, they wanted to do a new portfolio for me. So they shot that. And I worked with IMG Models, men's division, before they were bought out and turned into Public Image. And then Public Image unfortunately is no longer, so I was then with signed DNA Models, which is a pretty good agency out in New York. They just want to give me a really strong portfolio and get some fitness shots, since I'm an athlete. And try to get a little edgier look than maybe what people are used to. It was a little out of my comfort zone, but overall it was a good experience.

I was starting to like this guy but then he says: "I think we’re pretty evenly matched, with the exception of Nicole. She’s in a league of her own, we’ll say." in this interview. And to me it sounds like either he doesn't count Nicole as serious competition or that he is making excuses. It may not be his intention, but it sounds like that.
