Conan O'Brien Helps CBS Crush NBC
Coco may not have dropped any bombshells during his heart-wrenching 60 Minutes interview last night, but the former Tonight Show host did boost the program's audience enough to whomp on its NBC competition. Conan O'Brien helped increase the show's numbers nearly 40% from last week to a 2.2 rating among the 18-49 age group. Meanwhile, Dateline NBC placed third after America's Funniest Home Videos on ABC. His expired covenant-not-to-compete notwithstanding, O'Brien must still have signed away considerable rights when it comes to slamming the dopes who engineered the whole NBC fiasco. While the truth is that he's really not all that funny, he still has a certain elfish, albeit large, appeal and apparently a loyal, if faddish, following of twenty-somethings. Whether that can be translated into anything permanent on cable remains to be seen. Wistful, yes.. heartbreaking? hardly.
I thought Conan showed magnificent character in his interview. And while HE may not be angry at the way NBC treated him, I sure am. He was right about one thing -- his life is better now, and at least he won't throw away any more years at NBC. Andy by the way, I think Jay Leno deserves the NBC management jerks. May they fail to prosper.
A senior citizen who loves Conan's work . . .
