Shutter's Speed
Despite the arrival of two new challengers of varying accomplishment (one pretty good!; the other, miserable, sub-mental dreck), it was Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island that walked (swam? hallucinated?) away with the weekend. And then there was Avatar -- whose gross now boasts more donuts than a Krispy Kreme franchise -- which managed to pass the storied (my fingers tremble) $700 million mark at some point yesterday. Yes. That.
Read on for a closer look at the numbers!
1. Shutter Island
Gross: $22,200,000 (cume: $75,076,000)
Screens: 3,003 (PSA: $7,393)
Weeks: 2 (change: -45.9%)
Maybe it was the commercials touting THE GIANT TWIST ENDING YOU WILL TOTALLY SEE COMING that did it. Or perhaps the tantalizing prospect of a genius indulging his inner shlockmeister. Whatever the case, Shutter won the weekend by a sizable margin, despite East Coast weather conditions as unpleasant as the ones depicted in the movie. It's a great time to be crazy!
2. Cop Out
Gross: $18,565,000 (new)
Screens: 3,150 (PSA: $5,894)
Weeks: 1
Being too fat to fly on an airplane totally worked! Kevin Smith's critically eviscerated retread homage to '80s movies about oddly coupled police officers who drive around in a squad car bickering and humorously solving crimes pulled in a more-than-solid 18 mil. Now please return your trays to the upright position, if you can find them.
3. The Crazies
Gross: $16,521,000 (new)
Screens: 2,476 (PSA: $6,672)
Weeks: 1
This was about where Overture predicted Crazies would land, but look for it to have longer legs than Cop Out in the weeks to come. So don't worry, nutjobs -- it's still a great time to be crazy! Fruitcake it up!
4. Avatar
Gross: $14,000,000 (cume: $706,904,000)
Screens: 2,456 (PSA: $5,700)
Weeks: 11 (Change: -13.8%)
A mind-liquefying 13 percent drop in its eleventh week nudged Avatar into the $700 millions, and the great unknown. Where does it end? Only Aywa knows. Pack a lunch and a sweater, Avi! We worry.
5. Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Gross: $9,800,000 (cume: $71,214,000)
Screens: 3,302 (PSA: $2,968)
Weeks: 3 (change: -35.8%)
Everyone can relax. The lightning has been recovered in a studio apartment in Oslo, with only minor moisture damage, and will be returned to the Greek God authorities immediately.
6. Valentine's Day
Gross: $9,505,000 (cume: $100,358,000)
Hey, look who else celebrated a money-birthday this weekend: it's Valentine's Day, who's now a blushing, breathless, afterglowy member of the 100+ High Club. Why you little cheddar-horny rascal, you.

Quote from my 60+ mother after taking my nephews to see Avatar this week:
"It cost me $100 to see a long movie that was so boring!...But I kept all the glasses so next time I won't have to pay extra!"
Oh, Mom.
Looks like Dad was right...
Apparently I do get my "gd brains from HER side of the family."
