What's On: Surviving the Funny or Die TV Adaptation

Last Friday, HBO premiered two half-hour programs that were adapted from other mediums by A-list comedians. The first, The Ricky Gervais Show, turned out to be an old podcast recycled with simple animation. The second, Funny or Die Presents, based on the website created by Will Ferrell, Chris Henchy and Adam McKay, incorporated some new sketches with big names (Don Cheadle, Zach Galifianakis and Zooey Deschanel) with old bits ("Drunk History"). And while the television adaptation of FOD shared the same new wave spirit of its website, it also lost some of its appeal in translation. Tonight, the show gets its second (and for some viewers, it's last) chance to prove that it is worthy Friday night programming.

Funny or Die Presents [12 AM, HBO]

The best sketch from last week's premiere proved to be the the FOD mainstay, "Drunk History," which starred Will Ferrell in an alcohol-soaked reimagination of the Abe Lincoln/Frederick Douglass relationship. Before you write off the series completely though, tune in tonight to see an unconscious Wayne Newton star in a bit called "Sleeping With Celebrities."

The 41st N.A.A.C.P. Image Awards [8 PM, Fox]

The N.A.A.C.P. honors the most outstanding "people of color" in the entertainment industry tonight. Tony-winning actress Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls, The Princess and the Frog) and actor/author Hill Harper (CSI: NY) host the ceremony which will be broadcast live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Tyler Perry is set to receive the Chairman Award for his distinguished public service while Wyclef Jean take home the Vanguard Award for promoting important racial and social issues. Other attendees include Jamie Foxx, Lenny Kravitz, Regina King, Taraji P. Henson, Adam Rodriguez, Sherri Shepherd, Mo'Nique, Morgan Freeman, Sandra Bullock, Gabourey Sidibe, Alfre Woodard and Mariah Carey.

2010 Winter Olympics [8 PM, NBC]

There are only three more days remaining in the 2010 Winter Games coverage so enjoy tonight's primetime combination of men's short-track speed skating, women's snowboarding, women's skiing and four-man bobsled. Lindsey Vonn, the champion skier that NBC is touting as America's Sweetheart, competes in her fifth and final event, the women's slalom, while Apolo Ohno tries for gold during the live 500m and the 5000m relay. During the commercial breaks, flip to ABC for some fictional winter sports action in Blades of Glory, starring Will Ferrell and Jon Heder as rival figure skaters.

A League of Their Own [10 PM, Bravo]

This '92 Penny Marshall film may not have earned anything more than two Golden Globe nominations (Best Original Song, Best Performance by an Actress), but 18 years later it holds up as a charming depiction of the little-mentioned and short-lived All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League. Geena Davis and Lori Petty star as rivalry-torn sisters and teammates, Tom Hanks as the alcoholic coach/ex-player and Madonna co-stars in her most impressive film performance to date.
