Finally, Avatar Wins Something! (But Not What it Wanted)

James Cameron may or may not have his Oscar speech drafted and ready for next month, but he'd do well to keep his eyes on the real prize: The blessing of the International 3D Society. The month-old organization honored Avatar as 2009's Most Astounding Achievement in 3D, or Best Picture You Can't See Without Glasses That Eff Up Your Brain, or whatever they decide to call it. (And really, the BPYCSWGTFUYB-ie is as catchy an award name as they're going to find; thank me later.) The blockbuster didn't stop there, either.

Zoe Saldana also won recognition for best performance in a 3D feature, finally validating all that awards chatter that went pretty much nowhere in January. Up won best animated 3D film, while G-Force earned the distinction of best 2D to 3D conversion. (At least now we know Clash of the Titans is in the running for something next year.) The winners were chosen by a blue-ribbon panel of more than 100 3D technology experts and professionals; word on the street is that Avatar split the vote between presumptive front-runners Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience and My Bloody Valentine. The shocking upset was announced Tuesday in a ceremony at the Chinese Theater, sparking instant celebration riots by Meth Jakesully, Aggro Neyteri and the rest of the notoriously violent N'avi imitators just outside the door. Take that, Hurt Locker.
