Finally, Crapocalypse Classic Birdemic Coming to Theater Near You
The world isn't fair, but it's pretty freaking hilarious. How else to explain the ongoing distribution limbo of such excellent Sundance entries as Animal Kingdom, The Imperialists are Still Alive! and Lovers of Hate while a surefire qualifier for the most abysmal film ever made -- the abject Hitchcock rip-off Birdemic: Shock and Terror -- was this morning reported to have found a buyer? You might remember James Nguyen's screechy feature debut as our resident bad-movie guru's pick for the ultimate cinematic expression of the Crapocalypse. Now, after an eternity held over by Birdemic's desperately weird YouTube teaser, we're finally getting a behind-the-scenes look at the goods. Well, maybe not "goods," but you get the idea.
The acquisition by Severin Films -- a British company that fondly characterizes itself as the "Criterion of smut" -- appears to have transpired some time late last year, before Birdemic topped Movieline's list of 10 Disaster Films Even More Crapocalyptic Than 2012. But the announcement only flapped over our transom today, accompanied by new awareness of this getting-to-know-you video that really drives home the Z-grade splendor of the whole enterprise. Ostensibly Nguyen says he has made a "romantic thriller" in which Hitchcock's Birds muse Tippi Hedren makes a special appearance, but all I see are no-budget maulings and a few "actors" swatting at what appear to be squawking animated GIFs.
Still, you've got to hand it to Nguyen, a Vietnamese immigrant and mid-level Silicon Valley software engineer who decision to go for broke (and apparently achieve it) took more guts, determination and initiative than most would-be filmmakers ever summon. Have a beak -- er, peek for yourself. It's Friday, you've earned it.

I saw Nguyen's movie Julie and Jack on Netflix recently. That's one of those car-wreck movies you can't take your eyes off of.
I watched it and constantly wondered to myself: what was going on with the movie, was it a joke, was it made by someone who knows English words, but not English sentences, has this person ever seen a movie?
And yet, I can't wait to see Birdemic. Does that make me a sadist?
Can't wait!
