Hulu to Charge as Soon as 2010, Warns Pringles Mascot

Step one: Infiltrate our atmosphere by disguising themselves as smug Fox animation moguls. Step two: Have the Visitors star in aggressive TV marketing campaigns touting their free, online content distribution system. Step three: Eat our brains. Step four: Charge us for the service. NOW WAIT JUST ONE SECOND. I was totally fine with the whole Hulu business model when all I had to do in exchange for watching missed episodes of The Office was sit through a few ads and have my brains sucked out of my ear by an alien.

But now recently instated News Corp Deputy Chairman/ beloved Pringles mascot Chase Carey suggests that the service -- a joint venture of News Corp, NBC Universal and ABC Inc. -- will begin migrating over to a subcription-based system as soon as 2010. Talking to Broadcast & Cable's OnScreen summit, he said: "I think a free model is a very difficult way to capture the value of our content. I think what we need to do is deliver that content to consumers in a way where they will appreciate the value. Hulu concurs with that, it needs to evolve to have a meaningful subscription model as part of its business."

Have you no shame, Hulu aliens?

This will only work if they make a nude Jenna Jameson the Hula spokesperson.

  • SunnydaZe says:

Plus, they need to change their name to "Hula" so my previous comment isn't stupid.

  • Old No.7 says:

Oh, God forbid I should actually figure out how to program my fucking DVR again.

  • Dimo says:

This is total corporate bullshit! I'm sorry, but why should I have to pay to watch network shows that are already broadcast for free to begin with? And, I have to sit through commercials as well. You can eat my brains all you want, but screw you if you think I'm paying for it!

  • MCU says:

So wait -- basically they've decided they're shutting down Hulu?

  • wanna says:

I would only pay if there were to be guaranteed NO ADVERTISEMENTS AT ALL - I would never pay to watch content with ads and never more than $10 a month.

They seem to be appreciating pretty much as is. Why mess with something that seems to be working? The ads displayed are probably better targeted than what's on general tv, the subscriptions give you automatic user data, why shoot yourself in the foot by charging? Oh wait, because you work in tv and are a moron.

  • Daft Clown says:

$120.00 a year for a membership to Hulu? You stupid.

  • Jee says:

Sorry Hulu. You lost me by simple suggesting this.
I'm already sick of advertisements and I refuse to watch regular TV.
I'll stick to the free services out there thank you very much.

  • i would pay. maybe says:

it is it ad free or just one ad at the beginning and the banners on the page and the price isn't crazy, I would pay. I can get all the shows I watch on hulu or the network pages at this point so I have no real reason to have cable. and I just got a new 27 inch HD computer so that actually looks better than my old 19 inch tv. so if I could save $20-30 dollars by cutting cable and paying hulu $10-20 a month, I'd give it a whirl to cut the ads.

  • Daft Clown says:

All your base are belong to Hulu.

  • Rigby says:

I tell you what, Hulu: Make a deal with Roku, so I can watch on my TV without cumbersome hookups to my laptop, and you've got a deal.
