Meg Ryan Does Misery in Serious Moonlight Trailer
Serious Moonlight is supposed to be a light-hearted comedy, but it's got long odds. First, there's the unlikely premise: Meg Ryan duct-tapes cheating husband Timothy Hutton to the toilet until she can force him to fall back in love with her. Then, there's the side-story of loss, as Serious Moonlight is based on a script by Adrienne Shelly, who was brutally murdered before her film Waitress was scooped up at Sundance in 2007.
And finally, there's one other thing. And I think you know what that thing is.
That'd be Meg Ryan's face, so drastically reconfigured and all the more odd when you see it put through Ryan's familiar romcom paces. (I struggled to find a screencap that didn't look like a cheap potshot at the actress, and it wasn't easy.) It's just become too difficult -- and disconcerting -- to ignore Ryan's plastic surgery anymore, and while Hollywood can be awfully rough on women over forty, I don't think it's going to help matters when those women don't look like women after forty anymore. Meg Ryan's chief asset has always been her relatability to women. How will they recognize themselves in her when they don't even recognize her?
VERDICT: Can fight the Moonlight.

Comments
On the bright side for Meg, the way Hollywood is recycling everything these days, the reboot of Howard the Duck should only be a year or two down the road.
In fairness to Meg, the excessive lip augmentation (and whatever she did to her cheeks) that was so upsetting a few years ago seems to have settled.
Sorry, but that screencap is just about the only scene where her lips look weird. She looks much better now than a few years ago, agree with troutpout on that one.
And this is not a light comedy or a romcom, it's a dark comedy. Written by the late Adrienne Shelly (murdered in 2006), made in under three weeks on a budget of less than one million. I would give them credit for that.
come on Kyle buchanan, i watched the trailer, for Serious Moonlight and meg R did not look that bad, perhaps a few years ago she had a few unsettling procedures done that were quite ridiculous --but seriously she does not look bad here...if anyone looks ridiclous now it's Nicole Kidman...Yuck! Just watch 'Peacemaker" again with George Clooney, when Nicole climbs out of the pool....now her face doesn't move...her lips are enormous..why is it that everyone wants big lips these days..it's so sad....
Why has not one snarky Hollywood website commented upon Maria Shriver's disastrous results upon her return from "time off" to the Today show?
I mean, it really is as plain as the skin on her face. Is it fear?
I think she looks much prettier than she did a couple of years ago. I will probably see the movie, I think it looks OK.
This is a dark comedy and the trailer doesn't do it justice. I saw it and it's fantastic. And like the others said, Meg looks fine now. For my money, it was one of the freshest comedies to come along in a while.
What difference does it make if Meg looks slightly better than she did a few years ago? So, the swelling has gone down. Her forehead still looks molded in plastic, and shows zero emotion or expression. It's a shame. And it's odd to me that this movie is about a woman so desperate to keep a man that she tapes him to the toilet. I mean, really? Oy.
Howard the Duck was cool...
I'm wondering Why Meg Ryan looks younger in this movie. Now I've the answer. The Plastic Surgery.
