Punish Letterman, Says NOW
While CBS ratings may have benefited from David Letterman's admission of interoffice romances last week, the National Organization for Women is urging the network to recognize Letterman's "abuse of power" and "take action immediately to rectify this situation." The feminist organization released a statement yesterday, criticizing the Late Show host's "objectification of women in the workplace," a strong sentiment that concluded on a defeated note: "With just two women on CBS' board of directors, we're not holding our breath." There was no rape, no one has ever said that letterman initiated the sex, it was the women that probably were the aggressors.
Anybody else remember when NOW said, it was OK that President Clinton had a "interoffice romance"?
And that no action was necessary.
Oh, ZEEZUS!! Maybe they LIKED each other! She hasn't come forward and stated she was FORCED; that her job was on the line. People meet each other at work. It happens. Most of us LIVE at work, so the only other option to meet people is a bar or a church. . .
Totes. We don't know the details of the Letterman Romances yet, and I have a feeling Letterman won't make that info public, nor will his staffers, for a good reason - discretion. High stress work environments breed this sort of thing. Just look at Mad Men or Cheers.
On another note, I find it kind of bullshit that a lot of women centric blogs (cough, Jezebel, cough) are taking this stance, as a sort of knee-jerk reaction, assuming that because he was a male boss, he abused his power, like, there's no way these could have been a consensual office romances?
I don't think that Letterman is preying on his employees. Have you seen the woman he had an affair with? She isn't exactly Jessica Alba. The problem is not just with men. A lot of women have a chance to have sex with average, ordinary men, but they choose not to, instead they go out of their way to jump at powerful men with money. In fact, you will find that these types of women would rather have no sex at all, and will only settle for these Letterman types, or as close as they can get. You saw this in high school with women jumping at university age men, jocks, popular guys, etc, and we are seeing it now as adults. I am sure there are men who take advantage of his employees, and abuse their power, but Letterman doesn't seem like the type. I think his personality made him attractive to these women, and that he didn't force or threaten them to be with him. Now if you said that Mike Myers did this, then maybe I would believe you, but even then, you still have all these stupid star struck women who would just throw themselves at him, so he doesn't even have to force them. I am not saying that men don't abuse their power and prey on female employees, because I know they do, and those guys should definitely be punished. Maybe instead of cowards like Chris Hansen going after chat room guys, he can take on CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, GM, GE executives, and managers who abuse their power in regards to employees. Let's see how far he gets with that.
I like Letterman but I don't like the hypocrisy coming out of this story
he went on air calling others to respect "morality".
that's the problem
now is not funny anymore. He's the last person to deserve a second chance, because he didn't offer any to the others he wanted off the job.
this is Justice, nothing else.
I agree with your general view about Letterman's romantic situations, especially the point you make about his work environment perhaps playing a strong, unacknowledged role.
However, many groups are taking this stance and soley to further their own private agendas. I don't think that NOW is any different or more out of line than Sarah Palin supporters self-righteously calling for Letterman's resignation as a sort of payback for his comments about Sarah and her daughter.
Certain people are searching for evidence to convict Letterman for having a very real human flaw and exposing it to the world instead of giving in to save face. It's not that I think Letterman deserves a free pass, nor do I think he'll ultimately get one. After all, he has to live with the family he's hurt and their knowledge of his affairs and all of those unseen factors that meet us in our daily lives when we really screw things up. But it's not for me to pass judgement on him. He didn't break any law that he should be convicted for nor do I have any reason to believe that he took advantage of any of his lovers.
anyone remember GOP morals? Me neither.
I didn't realize Justice was partisan.
Unlike Clinton and the fat pigs that he went for, JFK only went for the Rich and Famous women.... Remember Marilyn? And it wasn't exactly as though Jackie didn't know what was going on behind closed doors.
And then it didn't take Jackie to hook up with Zorba the Greek, either.
Letterman is fine; he never was the “Family Values” type. Yes, he probably cheated on his girlfriend now wife. But at least he does go around claiming he is Mr. “Family Values” like some of our politicians/ preachers (can you just see the grin on all “Fake News” reporters/ commentators and the Palin fringe). This has been a tough summer, for Dave, for our economy but at least he did not end up on the “Republican 2009 Summer of Love” list: Assemblyman, Michael D. Duvall (CA), Senator John Ensign (NV), Senator Paul Stanley (TN), Governor Mark Sanford (SC), Board of Ed Chair, and Kristin Maguire AKA Bridget Keeney (SC). Did I miss the NOW outrage over any of these people, especially Ensign? Such BS.
