Tracy Morgan Hijacks G-Force Press Tour For Personal Emmy Campaign

Now that Jeremy Piven is out of the running for a fourth consecutive Emmy, the playing field is open for 2009's Outstanding Supporting Actor in Comedy Series hopefuls. The crown could be passed to four-time nominated Jon Cryer, one of the thrice-nominated contendors: Kevin Dillon, Neil Patrick Harris and Rainn Wilson, or 30 Rock dark horse Jack McBrayer. But the most vocal of the nominees is Tracy Morgan, whose upcoming film, G-Force, has provided him ample opportunity to speak to the press. Innocent publicity for a talking guinea pig movie or carefully orchestrated Emmy campaign? You decide.

Tracy Morgan spoke to USA Today about his sobriety and newfound work ethic:

"The alcohol is dead now," he says. "But I still like to have a good time. I'm more professional now. I'm more mature now. When I'm filming a movie, it's like a boxer: no sex, no partying, no none of that. I like to focus on what I'm doing. As you start getting nominated for Emmys and start doing movies with people, the expectations start to go up a little more. I'm not going to falter to that. I'm just going to stay funny, stay regular."

"I'm going to direct a movie. I'm going to do Broadway one day. I want to produce one day," he says. "I hope to win (the Emmy), but you know, as far as I'm concerned, I'm a winner already, because of all the obstacles it took just for me to be here."

Morgan shared more about his sobriety to People Magazine:

"I've been sober for a year-and-a-half now, and I feel it all," he says. "I'm not inebriated anymore. I want to feel the good, the bad and the ugly. I want to remember it all. I couldn't do that when I wasn't sober. What I have learned over the years is to try to stay in the moment. I want to feel it all because I've realized nothing lasts. I'm not perfect but I strive for it. I take it one day at a time, but if you can get it to one hour at a time."

Wearing a bejeweled Michael Jackson shirt, Morgan also talked to David Letterman:

"If I win the Emmy, I'm going to glue it on top of my refrigerator. So if I get in trouble and I want to sell my Emmy, I gotta sell the whole refrigerator. It might bring down the value of the Emmy but it's going to bring the value of the refrigerator up."

If Tracy Morgan's G-Force exposure has any pull, the first-time nominee could be onstage in September proclaiming: "I love my Emmy so much, I want to take it behind the middle school and get it pregnant."

I now plan on rewatching Season 1 and 2 episodes of 30 Rock, to see if I can pick out the episodes where he isn't acting, and is just a drunk Tracy Morgan.
